Once, when I was a kid. Maybe 10 or 12 years old. A very rare occurrence. "Vacations" in the traditional sense, were not something our family did.

We took the ferry across and spent a week on the Island. I distinctly remember two things about it: The uber-cool 40's Dodge Power Wagon that the cabin caretaker (owner?) drove, and my first ever airplane ride. Dad took me with him on an aerial tour of the island.

This would have been the very early 60's.

Not helpful, I know, but I hadn't thought about that trip in many years.

That was helpful. Looking for a 50s type vacation experience.

We rented cottages there three times in the '90s. It is really a special place, I would like to go back again. Will go back one of these days now that I don't have to worry about vacation days (or lack thereof).

We took our truck over on the ferry so we could drive as much as we wanted. We also had bikes and backpacks, etc., in the truck so we could hike and bike ride too. When we were there, it was safe and fun to ride bikes on the roads since traffic was very sparse most of the day, and most drivers were pretty laid back. People seemed to be on "island time".

The library is a nice place to go read. There were only a couple of stores there at that time and their stocks were rather limited so if you have a favorite beer, foods, etc., you may want to bring it with you.

There was a beautiful little pond in the interior of the island where we would go listen to the resident loons at dusk.

The beaches were also beautiful. We took charter boat rides to the other islands (Squaw Island, Garden Island) and that's fun. I imagine it would not be hard to go fishing too, but we didn't.

Dang! I'm making myself wonder why we haven't been back in so long!

Edit to add: Obviously we went in the summer. I understand that winters may be a lot different. I was told it gets pretty isolated (i.e., no or very limited ferry service). I was also told that if the lake freezes over solid enough, island folks ride snowmobiles across the ice the thirty some miles to the mainland. Not sure I would be brave enough to try that!)

Slight thread drift.

We take our Summer vacation in MI. but have never been to Beaver Island. It is on my list.

However, I am fascinated with shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Several of which are visible on Google Earth.

There are at least two shipwrecks on the South side of the island.

If you go to Google Earth and go to:
45*34'33.82"N by 85*35'44.18" W . The 2012 image is best because water levels were low. If you zoom in, you will find the remains of two ships that sunk long ago. They are several hundred feet off shore, but I would suspect you can reach them on a paddle board or even a raft.

That part of Lake Michigan is so beautiful, but I have never been there in the Winter time.

There was a plane crash on this island last weekend that claimed 4 people and 2 dogs. A 11 yr old girl survived.

Yes, as a teen I had a friend with a wealthy father. Spent a week with his family in Harbor Springs, MI, and one day we all piled onto someone's yacht to spend a day over on Beaver Island.

I don't recall anything except his father and 2 friends rented Jeeps on the island. The rest of us piled in the 3 jeeps, and the three 40-something men drove like Mario Andretti on the island's dirt roads while the rest of us held on for dear life.

Most go to Mackinac Island, a bit to the NE. Beaver Island is many times quieter, enough to do, exploring & such. I’ve been a few times, flew in.

Check out Garden Island, just north of Beaver, sandy coves.

Beaver Island has some Mormon history, when they wanted to get away.
