Sure someone could open it or you could send an encrypted flash drive (via mail).
Or just transfer the file by a remote desktop session.

Send the USB via USPS, UPS or FedEx. I would use USPS Certified Mail.

Upon confirmed receipt of the drive by the person you chose, provide the password.

Safe deposit box and add them to the list and tell them where the key will be.

one time send it registered (NOT certified) mail. One of the few true bargains in the USPS. regular updates work out a secure email strategy.

Some of the replies are a little over my head and now I'm leaning toward USPS or FedEx. I might be asking technical questions for the next week if I go electronic.

We have a family 1Password account, so it can be kept up to date, with password changes, etc.

This is just a small amount of information for which text messaging would be suitable were it not for it's lack of security, yes? If so: Signal Private Messenger will be ideal. It's secure (strong end-to-end encryption), easy to install, and easy with which to connect to other people. (It uses your existing contacts it you give it permission to do so.)

Go ahead and test it. If you have a family member or friend nearby, the two of you install it, connect to one another, and find out.

The apps are free and advert-free. So it costs nothing but a bit of time to try it, and not much of that. If you don't like it you can just delete it.

Bonus: It's also a great cross-platform calling and video-chatting app
