My father is 85, his house has two doors and steps at each, he has issues walking now, and has new glasses, progressives and we noted he wasn't going outside as much. The steps were normal size but narrow, met code and there was a handrail but it was too low and not really sturdy, he's 6ft 200 pounds. They are not really good for someone his age, and a fall even into grass can result in broken bones and hospital stays. We had a local carpenter build out new steps from wood and a big heavy post handrail, higher which fits his height. The steps landing are double the width, so now he can go out, let the door close, and step down easily, so he goes out more often. Thought I had a picture, will get one this weekend. Might be a good solution going forward, and I'd second the idea to at least put a handrail there for him to grab. | |||
