Florida is nice to visit in the winter but I wouldn't want to live there. And I have for the last 17 years. They said you get used to the heat and humidity, BS.

I wouldn't go any further south than you are looking. I'd look anywhere along the coast north of Gulfport to the panhandle. Personally, I find area along the Suwannee and Steinhatchee Rivers interesting, but they maybe to rustic for some people. For example, my parents stopped at a bar in Old Town about 10 years ago. My mom ordered a glass of Chardonnay and the bartender asked what that was. Mom said it was wine and bar tender replied in a southern drawl "We got wine coolers." I hear there are two bars in Old Town now.

haha my mom is from Mayo and I know exactly where Old Town is....your description is exactly the truth

OP-stay as far north as you can bear...the further south the larger the cities and BS...and the bugs are no joke, as well as the weather-it's "sub-tropic" so that means it's hot, damned hot....

Central FL here, 20 years, does it get hot in the summer, duh it's Florida, does it rain in the summer, yes, is it Humid yes, theres your captain obvious answers.

If you want it to get a bit cooler stay north of a line crossing the state around Ocala, they get some nights into the low 30's during the winter, friends have seen frost there, for an hour, maybe 30 minutes...

South FL is pretty, tropical, Miami is well an eclectic east coast mecca for Noo Yawkers and South Americans, and Cubans, it's a big city. Cross the state to Sarasota and your age and money requirements go way up, most white and republican county/city in the State.

North of Ocala and it's a little more backwoods outside of Tallahassee and Jaxsonville.

It's a great state, no income tax, all the guns you can buy, carry permits are shall issue, lots of gun ranges, you can shoot outside, ride a bike or motorcycle, run, fish 365 days of the year.

My wife and I are planning a move to Jacksonville and we know very little about the area.

May I ask you a few questions about Jacksonville?

I'll take all of the help that I can get. If anyone else from the area wants to chime in, please feel free.

You can reach me at hammertime57@gmail.com

Many thanks in advance,

If you want a quiet place on the water consider further north along the gulf where the bend is or on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina, Georgia, or North Florida.

Yessir, it has been a nice spring over here in the panhandle, although too much rain. I don't know how people handle it from Tampa on down.

I hate the Tampa / St Pete / etc traffic, it's just a fracking madhouse.

And further south and it's either 'lil Havana or Blue Hairs from Queens.

Jax is like a never-ending city - military base. Haven't spent too much time there but it didn't blow my skirt up when I did.

Panhandle is growing a bit but still quiet where we are.

OP, good luck - you should be able to find something you like Wink

My parents moved from Pa. to NWFL in '59. I was 10 and my sister was 12. Been here ever since with no thoughts of moving. Tf you think about it every area has its pro's and cons. You just decide which is better.

Jupiter, FL gets my vote. Just waiting for home prices to come back down to earth before buying a second home there.

Grew up in Pensacola and currently live in central FL, would not move back to Pensacola.

Well ya, because that's the only time any sane person would go outside in Florida during the summer.

Halfbacks - people who move from places like Michigan and Wisconsin to Florida because they get tired of the snow only to find that Florida sucks for nine months of the year due to heat, humidity, direct sun, so they move halfway back.

I live just outside of Pensacola. I like the area but I wouldn't live "in town". We've had a little uptick in crime lately. The Sheriff is solid and clamping down but the intersection of FL/AL/GA seems to have a little drug & crime issue right now.

I just think the felons from other states roll outta state easily - we just had a sex offender from AL abduct and murder at 12 year old girl here, and earlier in the spring we had a druggie and his girlfriend go on a murder spree.

It's not rampant, but it's been less than stellar lately. But I live out in the sticks, nobody knows we are here, and every here rolls pretty heavy at all times. Vagrants and trespassers aren't tolerated. The sound of gunfire is pretty constant through my area (the good kind, target shooting / hunting / etc).

I'm hoping the Sheriff and more properly the Pensacola Police can get things in check. Because most of the shitheads are in Pensacola proper.

The beach is nice but touristy, downtown is nice but not too far off you can be in the ghetto, westside is and has always been 'meh', up north it is still country and quiet.
