For what little it’s worth I too think you handled it remarkably well.

As I sit here typing this I’m looking at no less than 3 full glass doors overlooking the back property. I’m not sure my wife would allow me to change them. It is what it is and your response, immediately getting the pistol which allowed you to get the AR is a great tactic in this circumstance.

I’m going to rethink my situation a bit..

Thanks for all the responses I just installed Arlo pro 4 system and really like it, Wife and daughter are happy too. where we live it's in a very low crime neighborhood, it really caught us off guard wife and daughter had already planned on getting their concealed, but this just gave them the extra push to get it done. I hope this is a onetime thing, I just can't imagine not being able to have a way to quickly protect my family.

There is Security Widow Film, goes on like a tint, that adds strength and helps the glass to not break.

Perhaps that might be a good option.

See if there is a "self defence" class that teaches "real life situation" defensive mindset and tactics.

Even if the tactics part does not "stick", the understanding of "how to and how not to" react, as well as what it feels like to encounter a threat and be able to assess, comprehend, make decisions, act and re-assess, repeat, is a giant leap in not becoming a victim to a crime.

The mind is the weapon anyone can carry, anywhere, anytime, without "permits".

A firearm is a useless tool without the mindset to do fight.

Glad you had your brain in proper mode.

Easy to see the two thought processes.

I already know in a stressful situation my wife is the one going to get us killed.
I wish I could train her to think calmly and not panic.

Glad everything worked out and everyone is safe.

My wife is a huge tactical liability. She could see me bearing down on a fire with an extinguisher in hand and would still stop to ask me if I was sure that's what we needed to do. Zero intiative.

I'm on one of those neighborhood social media things and it is now normal for someone to post a picture of a person prowling around their house early in the a.m. Seems they are out there....

I probably would have made the mistake of going outside and confronting the prowler.

This is what scares me about these things... true story... a number of years back one of my neighbors woke up in the night because of a strange noise near the front of his house... he realized it was someone trying to open the front door...which was locked... he got up and retrieved his 357 and looked out the front window and there were two large black men (going to go ahead and say it because we live in a pretty much white neighborhood) the two men were now arguing on the front porch.... what do you do? here is what was going on... these were two bouncers from a bar who had decided to do a good deed and bring a drunk guy home... he gave them the wrong address, actually lived next door, and the drunk after giving them his keys, which of course did not work in the lock, had fallen off the porch and was laying in the bushes passed out.

The lesson is obvious... call for backup and stay inside....

Cats are under rated as alert systems. My cat lets me know right away if someone is outside.
And a note on HayesGreener post concerning laundry on the line: I had a number of cases where prowlers were stealing ladies skivvies off clotheslines. In one of my neighborhoods, I had someone getting into unlocked houses and stealing the female residents underthings. The guy was good! Never caught him and I often wonder to this day if he did not move onto more serious stuff.

Very possible. Read about the Russell Williams case in Canada. He went from stealing and wearing women's undies to rape and murder. Lt. Colonel in the Canadian Air Force.

The security film is a great option for both doors and windows reachable by anyone. If you don’t have steel doors or even hard solid wood doors, put the film on any windows in your doors and lower level windows. We have Germans Shepherds that are quite protective. We also have plenty of firearms for use. I’ve worked with the wife and oldest daughter on their marksmanship skills.

Was the door this person a back or side door? If so, that obviously speaks to a bit more nefarious intent. Good job with your reaction.

We had two 17/18 yr old boys on our deck once after midnight, from a nearby TVA campground.

By the time I went outside they were running through the woods. We called TVA police and they did a little investigating. Someone saw the boys coming back into the campground late that night and told the cops.

Cop asked if we wanted to press charges. Told us that the parents said they'd make the boys come work in the yard and offer aplogies and such. We said that was fine. Never heard another word from them....
the cop did say he told them I would have been legally justified in shooting them since they were prowling outside the bedroom of my (at that time) pregnant wife. They didn't realize how close they were to a serious ending. Supposedly they had just been exploring and then saw the house and dared each other who would go on the deck - last camping trip before college BS.

It is hard to know who's just being stupid and who actually has evil intent - at least it is when they are just outside on the deck...

If you could see a weapon, it would change the decision-making.
