Today marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 8.

NASA has several pages covering the flight.

PBS aired a short film called Earthrise.

And Wednesday the 26th NOVA is scheduled to air Apollo's Daring Mission about Apollo 8.

Also I found on NASA's site the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal with lots of interesting reading and history.

On Christmas Eve that year the Apollo 8 astronauts broadcast live from their orbit around the moon. They read the first ten verses of the Book of Genesis about the creation. (Can you imagine that happening today - just 50 years later?) We had just gotten home from church in time to watch. I will never forget that.

I had completely forgotten about them reading from Genesis. You're right, that would never be allowed now.
