I know a lot of people here love their Thermapens. What makes it worth more than a $25 thermometer?

It:

lasts and lasts and lasts. I tried to avoid the expenditure and bought Amazon's best rated digital "instant" read thermometer. It lasted one grilling season and it was an Alaskan grilling season (i.e. ridiculously short). In 2013, I replaced with a Thermapen used the remaining year in Alaska, used 2 years in Calgary, and been using the past 2.5 years in Houston. At $21 per year, I would've spent $105 at Amazon during same time frame and it still would've been slower than the classic Thermapen (frequently on sale $59 to $69).

faster. Doesn't make a difference on a roast, but when you're reverse searing a steak it can be the difference between the desired (e.g. medium rare) and one level of doneness more (e.g. medium).

I also bought the silicon sleave which adds a little drop protection.

I have one and it's a tank, easy to use, works great and very hardy. I've dropped it a few times and it still work perfectly.

I bought a Classic Thermapen about two years ago and have not touched the Weber digital thermometer I formerly used since. Faster reading and easier to see.

I bought this as a cheap experiment with an instant read cooking thermometer, and it seems to be working.

I damaged mine, it went dead.

It was out of warranty but they "fixed" it for a flat fee of $25.00

I say they "fixed" it but it looked brand new when I got it back. In fact, I think it was.

And, oh, almost forgot. They had it for only 3 or 4 days when they shipped it back to me. That's excellent in my opinion.

Yes, I have several and give them for gifts. I can’t remember what it is like to cook without one.

Watch for sales as they regularly have good deals on certain colors etc. I have both the new model and the classic and you will be fine with the cheaper classic.

They are fast and useful around the kitchen. My wife’s thermapen crapped out after 1.5 years and it was replaced with my credit card’s extended warranty. If this one dies a similar death, we may go back to the old instant read thermometer.

Thermapens are worth every penny!

Bought my wife something other than a Thermapen that was well-reviewed. She's just kind of "meh" about it. But she absolutely loves her Thermopop.

+1 on the Thermopop. They are a good alternative to the more expensive Thermapens. I have one of each and the "pop" seems just as accurate while only being a couple seconds slower. I managed to grab two when they had a sale $20 each when buying two or more.

I do love my Mk4 Thermapen though.

yes. They are worth the money. All of the other electronic thermometers only lasted me 6-12 months. I bought the thermapen that takes the AAA battery and it's been perfect for the past 2 years and I grill year round.

+1 on the Thermapen and I find I get almost as much use out of my Chefalarm when grilling or oven cooking.

Could not cook without it.

Get one on sale. Or, get a "Thermopop" the gateway drug of precision thermometers.

I toss mine in with the camping stuff as well, makes BBQ chicken on the grate over the coals a 100% sure thing vs. a crap-shoot.

I also have "Smoke." 1 probe for smoker temp, other in the meat. When the meat hits the target temp, it's done. I also use it on the grill for Tri-tip or thick steak cuts. Cook on one side, flip and probe it. Pull at correct temp and rest.

I have Smoke and mk4. Very happy with both.

I do a lot of smoking/BBQ. The Thermapen is the only electronic device that I will ever use. Or need for that matter. I watch my fellow enthusiasts spend hundreds of dollars on wired or wireless probes that constantly monitor temps and alert their phone or start a fan to keep the heat etc.

The Thermapen tells me all I need to know. What the internal temp of the meat is. I don't even start to probe a brisket or pork butt until about 8 hours into the cook. I don't need to know when my brisket is at 120, 140 or 150. I need to know when it gets into the 190 to 200 range.

Ok I veered off topic a bit but the bottom line is yes get a Thermapen and cry a little once.

Thermapen is on the SigForum list of must-have gadgets.

Just buy it already.
