Just started a new job (hopefully my last before retirement) with a great company in my new state. Having been self employed most of my life, carry at work was not an issue. While my new employer is not anti 2A, they have a no gun policy very clearly stated in their handbook. I would like to hear some ideas of other creative options for self defense tools.

I am thinking about this on two fronts:
1. On person carry
2. In Vehicle carry

My job takes me all over a large city and surrounding metro areas. Since I’m new, I don’t know what areas are sketchy. I want to be compliant with my employers wishes while still being prepared for a personal confrontation or mob type event. I’ve trained in the arts and combatives for over 20 years, so I feel as prepared as possible on that front, and I have no problem dropping my pride on the sidewalk and walking away.

I always have a good “social” knife and flashlight on me, and was thinking about a personal sized oc product, along with a larger canister in my work vehicle.

Please share your combined knowledge and let me know any options I have missed.

It looks like you have the non gun options covered. Maybe add a large blunt object, Maglight?

If they don’t have a clear policy, shut up and conceal carry. Hope you never have to use it and move on.

You can carry a cane in a self assured manner without projecting feebleness and you can explain your use of it as anything other than a desperate need for support. I’ll steady myself, reach things, examine things without stooping down and flick things like soda cans off walkways, etc.
With a little training, you can retain the cane against grabbing hands and amplify any request to be left the heck alone. Plus, it is legal to carry anywhere. YMMV

I'm all by myself all night long, with meth villages all up and down the road, sitting in a guardshack that doesn't lock, in a yard full of containers full of whatever from China and Vietnam and Korea, you best believe I've got a burner and spare mags. I worked for 24 years in education. Guns absolutely forbidden:

On person
OC spray: ankle (easy to reach if sitting down) and pant pocket
Small strobe light: pocket
Kubotan: on key ring
Leather belt with heavy buckle

Not sure about the car but...I’d sure hate to leave my car during a riot. If I had to I’d sue want a non-descript bike helmet and clothing that blended in.
You mention being new to the area.... might be a good idea to have a map and compass. Check with locals about areas to avoid. I carry a t-ball bat under my seat.

As I said in my post; they have a very clear policy on the subject, going as far as to perform spot inspections of vehicles and contents.

It is a great opportunity for me that will finish off our retirement savings quite nicely, so I’m playing by the rules.

Some kind of pepper spray. Be sure to double check the policy. My last employer nixed "weapons".

Its a little bulky but have you looked into the BYRNA kinetic pistol? Five round mag for either kinetic, pepper or a combo of both. Hard hitting at 50 ft. Long waiting list when I bought mine due to high demand. Not sure if they have caught up. Hibben knives has a nice belt buckle knife.

Don't forget the value of a good quality baseball bat.

I prefer a Hannah bat over anything else.

I bought a 34 ounce ball peen hammer at Harbor Freight. My wife reminded me that I left it in the car. I told her "I know'.

The 18” or 25” Pittsburgh breaker bars from Harbor Freight are under $10 each with a 20% off coupon. Either would not look out of place in your car. The Pittsburgh 24" tire iron would be less that $5.

There is a discussion about canes on page 2 or 3 of the lounge here that's been going on for some time. A good, solid cane can be an excellent defensive or offensive tool when carrying a firearm isn't allowed. And I can't imagine anywhere a cane would even get a second glance.

The only negative thing I see is that one of these street predators may look at somebody carrying a cane as being handicapped, and therefore an easy target.

I've carried an old hickory pick handle in my pickup for years. A cop friend asked me about it once and I told him that one never knows when one will run across a pick that needs a handle. He just shook his head.

I do keep fixed blades in there also, but California does not allow concealing fixed blades, but we can conceal any size folding knife in case I have to leave, I can stick this in my pocket and go.

There's also a can of Fox Labs spray in the middle console compartment.

If metal detectors aren’t a concern,

Count me in with Smartcarry/Thunderwear and a small revolver or auto loader.

I’ve carried in that manner in situations that were absolutely “can’t get caught” without the faintest concern, until a metal detector came out.

I know it’s not the solution you ask for, but it’s mine. That and situational awareness.

Wasp spray. Any way to keep a can in your bag? Just say you’re allergic to bee and wasp stings. They are attracted to your car so you need to carry it. The stuff will shoot 20 ft or more. Not the best option but it will work. I recommend it to ppl that don’t like guns but need something.

Stay away from using substances NOT designed for defensive use! A good quality OC product isn't just more effective, it's less likely to cause permanent injury to you (if wind causes accidental contamination) or an offender who'd have great grounds for a civil action if there's any question about the necessity of your spraying him.
