When I don't know what to give, I tend to give a gift card to a very nice restaurant, particularly if the person receiving the card would not ordinarily be in a position to go to such a place.
For example, a chance to go to Ruth's Chris or Morton's when your budget is typically Chili's, is a nice treat.
