A few things I had forgotten...

We were beaten 10-3 two weeks earlier by the Soviets in Madison Square Garden.

Last-second goal at the end of the first period by USA tied the game.

Tretiak pulled after first period.

USSR had outscored opponents about 50-4.

The big one: the game was not televised live, but 3 hours later. I remember watching the game in the living room, but I don’t recall if I knew the outcome beforehand. Such is the fog of the years.

(The footnote-I’ve never forgotten, but many people I talk with have—this win over the USSR did not get the team the gold medal-they still had to come back from behind in the third period against Finland two days later to secure the gold medal)

I stayed up and watched that game in 1980, and clearly did again. I guess I better go to bed though, work comes in a few hours

A friend and I were avid hockey fans, we played in a couple of men's leagues. We went to our favorite bar to watch the game, had no idea of the outcome. What a terrific win it was.

I still get goose bumps thinking about that game. One of the truly unifying moments in American history.

Agreed.

It's a great movie too. Kurt Russel did a fantastic job portraying Herb Brooks. It still saddens me to this day that Coach Brooks never saw the movie due to his accident. I guess God needed coach in heaven to run a hockey team....

The movie Miracle was required viewing on the bus on every road trip headed to the destination city.

There are several quotes that every real hockey coach knows by heart and players hate hearing

"Get a whistle"

"You guys don't want to work during the game, no problem, we'll work now"

"Goal Line..... dat one.." <point at an end>

"You think you can win on talent alone? You don't have enough talent to win on talent alone"

" AGAIN " <TWEET>

That was one of those moments where you remember where you were when it happened. I was in the Third Base bar in Marquette MI.

I was with a number of other officers in the Brunswick NAS O Club watching the game all those years ago. It was an unbelievable evening that I'll never forget. Smile

And y'all realize, that wasn't even for the gold medal, right?? They beat the Russians to advance to the gold medal game and won that against Finland, if I recall correctly. Yup...it was amazing, and I can still hear Al Michaels' voice in my head and picture goaltender Jim Craig asking for his fahthu with the flag draped over his shoulders and picture the entire team on the podium at the medal ceremony.

Just AWESOME memories.....

And they were losing 2-1 after two periods of the Gold game agains Finland. Then Herb Brooks turned to his team at intermission and said "If you lose this game, you'll take it to your fucking graves". They came out in the third and scored 3 goals to win 4-2.
