Knowing is Half the Battle

We bought our first flat screen in 2008. A $1,200 40" Samsung 120hz 1020P LCD tv. It was almost top of the line, had a 4" plastic frame around it, weighed about 60 lbs on the stand. It had no smart features. Over the years we hooked it up to a blu-ray player that was internet capable to get us into Netflix and Amazon and added an Amazon firestick, etc. All of the above were slow.

Three houses and 9 years later I was getting tired of the lag time for Netflix, etc. and after looking around for awhile ordered a 43" Sony 4K LED tv from Amazon. It is the largest that will fit in our living room tv built-in. 2 days later (today) it showed up on our front porch. It cost half as much, weighs half as much, and after setting it up just now, Netflix is amazingly speedy and picture is as-good, if not better.

Only gripe I have is on solid color screens (menu, etc.) you can see more vertical banding than reviews indicated. This was never a problem with the old LCD technology. I can't notice it watching TV or a movie though. The old tv will get relegated to another room for auxiliary duty as she still looks good and is going strong. Today's screen to the edge technology allowed me to get the extra 3" of diagonal size. Too bad they don't make 45" as I could probably get away with that even.

Go support the Trumpconomy and buy a new TV!

What do you think I've been doing the last 9 years!?! At least the TV won't succumb to the same boating accident I keep losing my guns to.

With your handle, I would think it's a piece of cake for you to locate and retrieve them, no?

That's been through for decades. price keeps going down especially when adjusted for inflation.

There's some principle that says technology will cost half as much and be twice as productive every six months. I erred thinking it's called Godwin's principle but that's the Hitler argument one.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I am likely a minority but I wish TV manufactures would stop putting the SmartTV features in the TV. Their interfaces suck and as you pointed out in your original post they get very slow. Roku and Amazon FireTV does a better job and keep up much better with updating their user interface to accommodate the many apps available.
I have never used any of the smart features on any of the TVs.

You are going to love the Sony!!

I hear ya.

I had a big 125 lb TV upstairs from 2005 and recently swapped it out for a 55" Samsung.

Very happy. Could have gone with the 60" but the 55" works for that space and they had a nice price going at the time.

Love to be able to access Netflix / Prime at the touch of a button.

PS4 graphics look really good on it too.

I'm still using Panasonic plasma with no smart features.

Still works great, though.

Same here. Just give me the tv with good visuals/specs. Don't need the smart stuff. Other items do those features much better.

Yeah I have a really nice 55" Phillips LED with the "smart hub" feature. It takes a good 2-4 minutes after turning the TV on before you can use the smart hub because the TV has to configure itself...

The only good thing about it is it uses the Chromecast platform so I can use my phone as a remote and send whatever video I want to the TV.

My Samsung Plasma from 2010 has a few features but not much.
Picture is still great.
Glad I went Plasma over LED back then.

It's a shame that plasma televisions were abandoned by the manufacturers. All things considered I think it produced the best picture.

Has anyone tried an OLED set? Are they the new plasma?

Yes, I guess you could call it that if the AMOLED variety is used.

It is the latest actual technology and not a cup-holder fad/feature.

Without a Doubt!
With the Pioneer KURO still being one of the best non4k pictures I have ever seen.
I have a Samsung Plasma that I hope it keeps on chugging for a long time. Great picture, no smart features, and keeps that little section of the living room a little warmer than the rest of the house!

We watch The Martian yesterday at our daughters house. They have a new 65" Samsung 4K tv with both a 4K ATMOS receivers and 4K DVD player. The 4K movie was unbelievable.

Total The investment was about $3,000. Cool stuff.

I agree on the leaving the smart interface out of tv's. I have a top of line Samsung Smart TV dating about 7-8 years old. The Smart interface stopped updating after a couple years and it is so slow I don't even use it on the TV now.
