Anyone else taking extra virgin olive oil as a health supplement?? Login/Join

I have been reading about the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil. Never consumed much before but after reading the benefits I looked up about just drinking it and it turns out it seems to be pretty common that people do that so I have started taking 2 table spoons a day. It could be a coincidence but I have already noticed that my knees feel better going up stairs. Being at age 72 I usually experience slight discomfort in knees going up stairs. Supposedly EVOO can reduce inflammation. I also want more fat in my diet and it helps with that too.

Just curious if anyone else is a fan of extra virgin olive oil for health benefits?

Yes, EVOO, lard/bacon grease, and butter.

Good and good for you.

Almost everything we cook involves olive oil (extra virgin, of course). I have given thought to trying it as a daily supplement as well; I like to work out in the gym and it’s gets more difficult every year. My knees are of most concern.

Been on a keto type diet for a few years, I'm not sure I need to "supplement" per se, but I have a high fat diet, high animal fat and high olive oil fat.

Thanks for the replies!

I also eat a medium size avocado every day starting a few months back, they are 50 cents at local Woodmans, usually have a peanut butter sandwich as part of lunch, have gone from skim milk to 2% milk, and eating more baked salmon.

Been taking California Olive Ranch medium 100 percent California olives.

I add omega 3 as a supplement not EVOO per se but generally consume EVOO as part of cooking/seasoning.

It's difficult to know if you're even getting actual EVOO when you buy it today.
There are a lot of fake products out there; Olive oil is one of the worst food products for fraud.
Not that the oils aren't good, they're just priced higher because they're supposed to be EV.

My wife is Italian, so we use it a lot in foods; we don't use it as a supplement.

Thanks, I read a few articles and videos on that and pretty amazing even to the point it is or was big business for the mafia in Italy. The California Olive Ranch brand is supposedly good to go and fairly widely available and not crazy high priced. Also more than a few "experts" said that EVOO should have a peppery taste to a degree that you get a distinct tingle in your throat when drinking a little of it.

Few years ago,I read an article about the EVOO fraud (no link, because I don't remember where I read it but I do remember that it was a reputable source). They mentioned a couple brands that were the real stuff. The one that sticks in my mind is Costco's Kirkland Signture brand.

Yes I read that article as well and the Kirkland’s Brand was among the highest (purest) scoring. The old time Italian brands like Beria are also very good.
My Italian grandmother lived until 2 days shy of her 100th Bday and my Mom is 93 and still in great shape. They both ate a lot of salads with of course Olive Oil on it.

I use olive oil (not necessarily "extra virgin") for cooking and occasionally on a sub sandwich or salad, but never thought of just plain drinking it.

I hear similar things about avocado oil, but it costs 3x as much.

I only buy California Olive Ranch oils which are certified pure. Their arbequina and arbosanas are very good, as is their 100% Californian everyday (for a less expensive option). They also import Italian Lucini that is very good and with a much more peppery flavor profile (great finishing oil), but is a tad more spendy. Worth it IMO though.

Not sure about doing as a supplement. I've taken cod liver oil. Dr. Gundry is a big olive oil proponent. Oil olive is practically like wine and can be pricey for the good stuff, be wary of those mixed with other nasty seed oils ( canola, soy etc.) The fake oils should be eliminated from the diet, probably more important than carbs. They are in practically everything so it tends to have an impact on food choices. Getting the omega 6/3 ratio closer to 4 to 1 is a good goal. Lots of info on the cautions of linoleic acid.

Would love to find a bottle of Domenica Fiore Olio Novello Cool

Yes, I take some when I need a little extra fat for the fat-soluble vitamins I take daily, so almost every day I'm slugging down at least a teaspoon or two. I also use California Ranch for the same reason you do; I saw some of those studies of fraud, and CR is supposed to be the genuine article.

The article that I mentioned, the one that said Costco's Kirkland Signature EVOO was good to go -- if memory is correct, the same article also mentioned California Olive Ranch as another good brand.

I buy the Kirkland because it's convenient; the local Costco store is five or ten minutes from my house.

^^^^ I've never tried Costco's but I've heard the same. I only get up (or down) to Costco a couple times a year, so it's just easier for me to have the COR stuff delivered.

If I lived that close to a Costco I suspect that I'd be broke. Wink
