Yes, and it is actually dumber than it sounds.

for fuck's sake. if we're gonna be stupid, let's go all the way. don't half ass the stupid. why don't we just give everyone powerwalls that will supply whole house power for 3 days. if most blackouts last less than 1 day, we're covered.

PR64This is some stupid shit.
I charge at home with solar and I already have to give a percentage back to the grid every day.
Yes, CA is a screwed up state.
I bought my Mustang Mach E not to save the planet because it won't but because it's a cool car and I don't drive much in retirement.
I'm not giving my self generated electricity from my EV back.

Southern RebelAll of you people that are criticizing this "thinking outside the box" are the very ones that criticized the concept of tapping your right arm to get a blood transfusion into your left arm. The two concepts are the same and the ultimate success will the same!

ugeestaXcel Energy here in Colorado proposed something similar last year. We received a flyer to participate in a energy storage plan and receive a $1,000 off the cost of the home battery storage system.
The plan was to have batteries installed in the house and Xcel would have the right to tap into their storage capabilities during peak energy usage to help suppliment the grid. They said the batteries would then be recharged at their expense during off peak hours.
Thank but no thanks.

71 TRUCKSo let me get this straight, you charge your car over night but the next day you don't use the car so the power company takes the power back.
Then when you need your car it needs to be charged again.
You decide to use your "bad" gas powered car because you need to go somewhere while your other car is charging.
You don't use the battery car the next day but want to us it on the weekend however because you did not use it after it was charged the power company took the charge back again, so now it needs to be charged, again.
Does this not defeat the purpose or are they just using peoples battery powered cars to supplement their broken power grid.

DoctorSoloIt's doable technically, and the e-car makers are driving the semi-conductor manufacturers to further optimize and scale up chargers. And bi-directional is very doable.
Having said that, when I heard of the idea, I said "Not in America".
If you are like me, your knee-jerk response was:
You don't get to take back the gas I pay for, so why the fuck would I let you put your slimy fucking hands into my batteries I pay to charge?
Try that fucking shit here and pull back a stump you commie motherfuckers.

Why can't Xcel Energy simply buy the batteries themselves and forge ahead with their plan?

They can, but you figure it out.
There is no end to the corruption around the infrastructure here. On every level, in every walk of infrastructure, there is embezzlement. We are going to make NY and Detroit look like Oklahoma in a short while.
Makes me sick, it really does.

stickman428Would this not cause unnecessary wear on the batteries as it is draining them which will require them to recharge to full range?

Every time power is transferred, you have losses because nothing is 100% efficient.
Not only is this another way for the man to fuck with you, but it's a great way to burn large amounts of precious power into nothing.
Aren't we concerned about energy production? Oh wait, not in this context since jerking around Joe Schmoe gives these assholes a raging boner.

stickman428Yep! The There is a finite amount of times you can charge an ev’s battery before you will begin to notice the battery degradation.
This proposal will cause unnecessary wear and tear on EV’s batteries while not doing much of anything to address the cause.
It simply creates another problem for the residents of California who own EV’s.
Is California going to pay to replace batteries they needlessly wore out with this moronic idea?
As someone who builds electric bicycles as a hobby (and some pretty damn fast ones at that) I can tell you the battery is one of the most expensive parts of the build.

Wouldn't it be more efficient to just build another coal plant and put it on the grid?

CooksterThe gubberment has come up with a hybrid game of three-card monty and the shell game.
It’s FUBAR.
Just wait until people find out that the GND is a colossal scam and its power-generating infrastructure will be woefully inadequate to backfill the power generated by the fossil and nuclear plants that are being decommissioned and not getting replaced.
Everyone will have to heat up their Soylent Green over a wood fire or something.
