olfuzzyInventor of green bean casserole dies at 92
Of course it's sad to hear of anyone dying, but now I have a name to blame for (IMO) the nastiest dish ever created.
The woman who created a Thanksgiving staple — the green bean casserole — enjoyed by millions has died at age 92.
Dorcas Reilly died on Oct. 15 of Alzheimer's disease, said Ken Tomlinson of the Hinski-Tomlinson Funeral Home in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
Campbell Soup officials said the New Jersey resident was the driving force behind the popular dish, made with green beans and cream of mushroom soup topped with crunchy fried onions. The company said it is the most popular recipe ever to come out of its corporate kitchen.
The original recipe card was donated to the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2002.
"Dorcas was an incredible woman, whose legacy will live on for years to come. She will be missed by her Campbell colleagues and all those who were impacted by her creativity and generous spirit," the company said in a statement.
Reilly was a Campbell Soup kitchen supervisor in 1955 when she combined the ingredients of the now-legendary green bean casserole for an Associated Press feature.
Reilly worked for Campbell's on and off between the late 1940s and 1988, when she retired as manager of the Campbell's kitchen.

Whaaaaat? it's just not Thanksgiving without a good green bean casserole!
Let me guess, you've only had the kind made with the (already) overcooked canned green beans and then it gets baked into a mush?
I love the kind made with frozen french cut green beans or fresh ones, and with a bit of cheese added too. The original version is a bit bland/boring.

RAMIUSIt’s actually pretty good. I’m surprised I like it...but if done right, the texture and savory flavor goes well with turkey.

Jimbo54My wife makes a variation of this that gets high praise every time it's served. The only things that are common with the original recipe are the soup and the beans. She adds sautéed onions and button mushrooms plus some spices. Mummm, I'm ready for some right now.

mark_aShe may have invented it but Alton Brown perfected it...
It is worth the effort to cook it like he does.

My wifes recipe is very close to Paula Deans recipe she says. Use that as a start. Very, very good.

jhe888Well, RIP to the old girl, but I am not down for anything made with canned "cream-of-whatever" soup. That stuff is foul.
Canned green beans are nasty, too.
Come to think of it, the onion thingies come from a can, too.
Too many canned ingredients.
I should try the Alton Brown version - no canned soup, a homemade sauce, and fresh beans.

"I come from a line of Lutherans with Michigan roots. And if there was any chance three or more of us got together, along with the "Come Lord Jesus" prayer, you can bet somebody also had a dish of green bean casserole with them.
In fact, I think there's a recipe tucked inside my old confirmation handbook right next to the “Apostle's Creed.”"

That's how I feel about beets.
As for green beans, I love them in any form, but especially fresh ones cooked with ham hock or a little fat back. I like green bean casserole as long as the beans aren't mushy.
On a slightly related note, do Yankees bring casseroles to the grieving family when someone passes away? What casserole do you take to the family of the casserole queen?
