I’m fifty nine years old, 6’2” and 307lbs. My highest was in the 380’s. I’ve been walking a lot lately and really humping it. My heart rate got up to 140bpm during my last walk, I was pushing myself. Is that too high and at what BPM would be sufficient for me to lose weight?

I started about the same weight.

I'm down over a hundred pounds now, and from two years of working out, drove my resting heart rate from the 80s into the 60s.

When I started, 140 was typical for my aerobic exercise.

At my peak output today, I can manage a 50% increase (between 95 and 105 bpm) for over an hour riding a bike at 17 mph or on the treadmill at 2.8-3.0 mph up a 2% grade for 45 minutes (still getting used to two new knees).

Today was interval training on the bike and I max'd at 118.

What is your resting heart rate?

I don’t say this to offend, but you are a big dude and 60 years old. Only based on what you’ve shared, it appears you must be newer to working out.

Based on the stats that you provided, have you spoken with a doctor or asked their advice on any of this?

I have not. I will make an appointment, I already see an endocrinologist for thyroid and diabetes and a hepatologist for my liver so I guess I’ll add a heart doctor. But when you eat what you want your whole life that’s what you get.

Living the past, man. BTDT damned near into a grave.

Focus on now and the future.

But do see a cardiologist. Mine was overjoyed when I started working out again.

Eat right, exercise, spend time doing positive things.

Brother, do I understand. I’m 55 and finally getting my shit together. I’ve worked-out most of my life, but I’ve also worked equally hard to sabotage it with food. Finally finding balance.

It’s worth it!

Congratulations on the weight loss and the walking. It’s never too late to better one’s self.

I routinely get my heart rate in the 140-150 range. Resting rate is low 50s and sometimes in the mid to high 40s.

I’m 55, six one, 235 on a good day.

Definitely check with your dr and get your bloodwork done.

Five years ago I wasn’t active. Now I workout quite a bit. Weights, stairs, kettlebells, steel mace, rucking, etc.

Cardio is hiking based. I do 20 mile hikes on occasion and 10 mile “street” hikes.

Once you get cleared by the doctor, consider adding a weighted vest or moderate elevation to your current routine. After you get your feet wet with that, start looking at kettlebells and things like rowing machines.

If you’re like me, you will get somewhat addicted to feeling better. My doctor has taken me off a couple of meds and my bloodwork numbers are great now.

Again, congratulations on where you’re at now. Continue to challenge yourself and you’ll be surprised what you can achieve.
