Now to set it up, transfer all my shit from my Win7 box, download Fusion 360 and try to figure it all out. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

My transition from Win7 to a Win 10 box was pretty much pain free. That was 5 years ago. Just go slowly and use on-line help when needed. Good luck and have fun. You'll love it when it's done. I recommend Open Shell as a replacement for the Windows 10 start menu. You'll still have the ability to bring up the W10 start menu when you want to (to uninstall some of the useless garbage on there - just right click and hit uninstall from the W10 start menu), but it will behave more like Windows 7.

Thanks, I'll try that. I work on an elderly friend's Win10 box and the most aggravating thing is trying to figure out where the functions are that I'm used to using in 7. Got the box installing now. So far, it's pretty smart, found the keyboard, mouse and my wireless connection without prompting. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Windows 7 to Windows 10 is pretty painless. It was Windows 8 that sucked kangaroo balls. You got this. Fusion 360 runs so much nicer on a modern machine. I have a Win10 box with a Ryzen 7 and all SSD drives and it is smooth with Fusion.

I routinely switch between Win 7 and Win 10 machines and like the Win 10 menu better (though I'll admit this was probably over time...). Quick tip on finding things you're looking for (Control Panel, for example): Press the "Windows" key on the keyboard and type the first few letters for what you're looking for... Example <Windows Key> <c> <o> <n>

Agreed - Windows 10 is not a problem. It looks different, but you'll get used to that. The actual switch wasn't too bad. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Good luck. Deliberate steps and patience will yield the best results. Any guy that can rebuild tractors, is talking about munging transaxles onto an old tractor and builds models like you has the Windows 10 upgrade nailed. Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

Going smoothly so far. Has a 7-esque desktop, I've downloaded Brave for a browser and Open Office for a suite (I like their word processor and spreadsheet) and Fusion is installing now. At the moment, my internet connection is via the wireless link. I wonder if hardwiring it would be faster. The computer lives about 2 feet from my router and my old box is hardwired. Unless your router is ancient, the bottleneck for internet speed for most people will be the size of the "pipe" coming into the house from your provider. Go to Speedtest.net and test your speed. That will give you an idea of how fast your connection is. If it's close to what you are paying for, then it's likely that the service is the bandwidth limiting factor, not your local WiFi connection. You can test your old box to compare, or even just move the ethernet cable over and do an A/B test with Wi-fi against your wired connection. Of course, if you are paying for 500mbps and you are only getting 70mbps tested, then yeah, maybe you should look at each individual piece of hardware to make sure each can provide the speed that you desire.

I live in East Overshoe. DSL is the hottest connection available. < 2mbps... ![]() Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Grab LibreOffice. Open Office hasn't been in really active development for a long time. LibreOffice is a fork of Open Office, so it'll be very similar.

Pretty sure your computer will access your internet as fast as your DSL will handle on even the oldest wifi standard. Even some tin cans and string would probably max out the DSL bandwidth ![]()
