Mississippi senator jokes about 'public hanging'

A video of U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith , R-Miss., who faces a runoff against an African-American opponent, joking about attending "a public hanging" went viral Sunday as she insisted there was nothing negative about her remark.

"If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row," Hyde-Smith said during a campaign stop in Tupelo, Mississippi. The man she was referring to was identified as a local rancher.

Hyde-Smith's opponent in the runoff is former Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy.

The video was posted by Lamar White Jr., the publisher of The Bayou Brief, a nonprofit news site in Louisiana. White told Mississippi Today that he did not take the video, and it was recorded on Nov. 2, before the election.

No matter what, we have a minimum 51 seats.

53 if we win FLorida and Mississippi. Arizona looks gone, otherwise it would've been 54.

I think Ihave that right.

I am still hoping for 53 but this Mississippi republican senator is not doing the republican party any favors and IMO could cost her the election.

Florida is a mess beyond belief. Sunday night a box of provisional ballots for Broward County was found in the back of a rental car by an Avis employee at Fort Lauderdale airport. Car was rented to a democrat Broward County election person.

Especially considering that she used to be a democrat.

She will win the runoff by a comfortable margin. The math doesn't work for the Dems to win. Their best shot was to get a majority in the general. Once it goes to a runoff, the GOP has the advantage.

Yeah, she is a fucking moron. But, it guarantees nothing about "huge" voter turnout for the opponent.

Look at all the truly shitty things Sinema said about AZ. And, look at the huge Republican turnout for McSally. Roll Eyes

I have always been a "glass half full" sort of person so let me say that even if we have only 51 we are better than before.

Jeff Flake is gone, John McCain is gone, Bob Corker is gone. AND the dims see that voting against a very good candidate could cost them their jobs!

The biggest enemy the republicans have are the enemy within the party (Rino never Trumpers)
We know who and what the Dems are, but McSally lost because of the above mentioned.

We don't keep electing them, it's that we for some reason keep allowing Dems to count the ballots.

I think you guys are playing into the hands of those that insist everything is about race.

Yeah I get it, black people have been hung before. But so have white people. The blacks who were hung by racists were generally lynched. She didn’t say a lynching, she said a public hanging.

The list of shit we supposedly can’t say grows by the minute. The only people who are making a big deal of the remark are the ones who wouldn’t vote for her anyway.

Through 1940ish, all executions in MS were by hanging. She didn't say a lynching, but that's the optics it presents.

In actual fact of the matter, she really was only saying that she respected her host enough that she would show up for him even if the event were distasteful.

She will probably still win by a reasonable margin, but she'd better start figuring out this isn't AAA ball any more.

Oh, I don't care one wit about her comment. I'm perfectly fine with it. The fact that she used to be a democrat sorta gave me pause though.

Nevertheless, I don't think we need to worry about losing this Senate seat.

There are very few eloquent individuals left in the Senate. Cochran did quite a few things for Mississippi as did Trent Lott. The current representation leaves a lot to be desired.
