Cheese Cake for Dessert

That will feed to two of us for a week

When my Mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer she made me a handwritten recipe book of her recipes, my paternal grandmother’s recipes, and my maternal grandmother’s recipes. All three women passed away 4 to 24 years ago.

Christmas dinner will be:
  • Mom’s London broil
  • Grandma’s baked beans
  • salad from a bag (just like Mom used to “make”)
  • Grandma’s peanut butter pie

    We are doing a ham and 2 turkey breasts.

    I have been thinking about doing a rib roast but I need to do a couple of practice ones first for confidence building purposes........

    Christmas Eve was ham and the fixins at the in laws. Today it is just the wife and I. We were actually talking about Chinese and going to a movie. No other plans today.

    We don’t have a standing meal we do each year as I like too many different things from my childhood that my wife enjoys making for me. She’s had to work hard this year because of a company change-over to a paperless system so I wanted to keep the meal simple. This year she’s fixin’ two of my favorites...chicken and dumplings with German Chocolate cake for desert.

    Mrs. Sig Marine and I hope you all have a delicious meal with your loved ones and a Merry Christmas.

    My folks are getting up in age. They love going to Ruth Chris once a year. They have been going since we lived in New Orleans so many years ago. My sister is an incredible cook and I like to help out. They haven't gone this year so we are making King crabtini, prime rib, Lyonaise potatoes, creamed spinach. These are some of my folks favorite things off the menu.

    Christmas Eve is traditional Turkey/ham etc. Christmas Day is Shrimp 2 ways, oysters 2 ways, Crab claws, Shrimp stew, Gumbo, and Grouper.

    We usually have Honey Ham or Prime Rib on Christmas but this year my wife & daughter wanted something different so homemade pasta fettucini in Alfredo sauce with grilled pistachio-encrusted chicken, pancetta and holy basil is on the menu. Can’t wait!

    For me it’ll be a tin of TJ’s smoked trout on German-baked pumpernickel with raw onion. More commonly, it’s King Oscar “Tiny Tots” brisling sardines, but it’s Christmas. Also some Progresso tomato basil soup. Then some blueberries and oatmeal (separately). I eat the oatmeal dry – I like it best that way. Then Cook’s Pantry sliced beets for dessert.

    Being my wife and I are both from New Mexico, we have the same as always: posole for Christmas Eve, and today will be New Mexico style stacked red chile enchiladas (not rolled).

    Last night, we had the dinner at a friend's house- Spiral ham, mashed potatoes, cajun corn, country green beans, mac 'n' cheese, etc. Tonight, we're hosting a cocktail party with champagne, mixed drinks, wine, and appetizers- shrimp cocktail, filet sliders, deviled eggs, teriyaki meatballs, pork won tons, cheese flight, etc.

    Whatever my sister fixes, but if tradition plays a role (and it does), it will be a good cut of beef (probably tenderloin), baked/stuffed potatoes with family-recipe "sour cream" (which is actually cream cheese-based, and much better), and some sort of green vegetable. Not too many fixin's for proper focus on what counts. A decent Cabernet, of course. Dessert will be very old family-recipe homemade Christmas cookies (which truly are the best you've ever had; we have been told as much by virtually everyone who has ever been lucky enough to get a tin), eggnog ice cream, and coffee. Maybe a nip of brandy or a cordial if my bother-in-law and I are feeling froggy. Works for me!
