I debated 13 mini or the standard size (not the large Max). The iPhone 8 Plus I had was just too large. I ended up with the standard size iPhone 13 Pro which is smaller than my old Plus but the screen size is almost as large since it runs to the edge of the phone. I did splurge on the Pro for the nicer camera because I rely on it for all my photography.

Same thing here. I went from a 7 to the 12 mini. They are the same size. I tried one of the biggest (12 pro?) and took it back within a few days as it didn't fit in my shirt pocket and would only go in my rear pants pockets where it was constantly catching my seat/door edge climbing in and out of the car. Plus the fact I didn't want it in my rear pocket.

I hope Apple continues to offer a mini type size but reports sound like they won't be at least for the next version. My perfect mix is an iPhone Mini, iPad Mini and MacBook Air.

If you have any hope of putting it in your pocket, get the mini.

They have to make them so big that you'll have to hold it in your hand. That way their logo is out for all to see.
