Hey all... I have a NAS, my computer and my wife's computer. While doing taxes today, it appears that I have multiple copies of old tax files spread among the 3 devices. I need a good, reliable and hopefully, free duplicate file finder that I can run across my network to flag duplicates based on a bit-bit comparison or an MD5 hash or some other method that will verify the files are exact matches. I will then manually re-name, archive or delete the files I do not need. Looking at online reviews of various utilities, my head is spinning. What do the SF IT pros use? The "Boz"

still_bill, I have used CCleaner in the past and it screwed me (file cleaner). I still have it on my computer and just checked. It will not scan network locations, just local drives (unless I missed an option somewhere). Thanks though... The "Boz"

Try SearchMyFiles: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/search_my_files.html ...let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. Luke 22:35-36 NAV "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves." Matthew 10:16 NASV

Dang dude, define duplicate? Bit by bit comparison? Whoa. That's a tall order my friend. I don't think you really want that. Could be wrong there.

I just need something that is going to tell me what is definitely an exact match and what is not. It can be any recognized form of matching other than file name and/or size. MD5 hash, bit-by-bit, byte-by-byte, some other voodoo, whatever. I will check out SearchMyFiles ikdr7989... Thanks. The "Boz"

Usually file name, file size, and date modified is enough. CCleaner should be able to do that. You might try mapping the network drive to your computer so that it shows up as E:/ and then have CCleaner run the scan on all attached drives. I've used that as a work around for lots of things that supposedly don't work on a network attached drive...
