Do---or do not. There is no try. |
This has happened to several friends lately, and that message seems to have been sent from my accountto lots of people. Is this something I can solve by just going in and changing my password, or do I need to create a new account?

I didn't know they did death notices. Finally got my password reset for that trash and dumped the account just last night. I feel better already.

Change your password if it makes you feel better, but it was probably not sent from your account, per se, but an account "cloned" from yours. If your Facebook profile is public, they need merely make another account with the same name, copy your profile information, incl. avatar, etc. into the "clone" account and away they go. I believe there's a mechanism whereby you can notify Facebook of such things and they'll whack the fake account. (But I haven't been on FB for a while, so I don't know for sure.) In the meantime: Go through your privacy settings and lock things down to stop future abuse of your "identity," such as it is on FB. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system,,,, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe "If we let things terrify us, life will not be worth living." -- Seneca the Younger, Roman Stoic philosopher

I assume you've checked your messenger and you see no profile, right? Have your friends look for your name on their facebook. Chances are, as someone said, your page got cloned and then the person sent friend requests to your friends. You friends will see there are two of you on their lists. Change your privacy so that only your friends can see your profile. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I actually got on my desktop computer, got onto Facebook (just typed facebook.com) and a window popped up that had a guide to verify step by step who I was. It showed me several pretty old posts and friend contacts that proved to my satisfaction it was really Facebook support I was dealing with. It didn't ask for any personal ID information. Today (Thursday), I've gone back in and looked through some random posts and contacts to see if anything appears to be compromised. I also changed some settings to increase security. It looks like everything is okay right now. Thanks for everyone's help and advice.
