Rogue Prosecutors and the Rise of Crime
Cully Stimson
The Heritage Foundation

excerpt:
Although the rogue prosecutor movement is incredibly well funded, it is showing signs of electoral vulnerability. Voters in blue cities who were initially persuaded to vote for “reform minded” candidates who talked about “reimagining” the criminal justice system and eliminating so-called mass incarceration, are increasingly coming to their senses given the harsh reality of rising crime rates.

The lesson for voters across America is to pay close attention to “low visibility” local races—such as district attorney races, which directly impact public safety—to protect their communities against the kind of devastation we see in so many of America’s once great cities.

Yeah, the idea of legislators passing laws, only for dweebs to thwart them through non-enforcement of the laws they choose to disregard seems more than a little unConstitutional to me.

Or, maybe I've got this rule-of-law thing backwards and the path forward is to elect our own kind of dweeb. Someone who goes, "In this jurisdiction, no NFA violations will be prosecuted, nor will failure to file or pay Federal taxes, nor prosecutions originating in failure to follow Federal regulations, and significant cash bail will be required in all cases, regardless of laws to the contrary..."

Harris County (i.e. county that contains Houston, TX) is an example of rogue prosecutor elected and falling out of favor with voters.

Harris County DA Kim Ogg was funded by George Soros and campaigned on a CJ "reform" platform. Mainly talked about low level crime, but once elected it was everything up to including murder. Murderers were released on low or no bail (to be fair, DA recommended low/no bail and a rogue judge had to go along with it), and some used the freedom to eliminate witnesses and others used the freedom to commit more murders. If someone was on bail for murder in Harris County and committed a violent felony in another county their bail wasn't revoked. Both HPD and Harris County Sherriff's were in multiple shootouts with parolees which resulted in both officer deaths and gunshot wounds. The police officer's union president railed on the district attorney's office repeatedly as the LEOs were sick of the DA's impact on public and officer safety.

Harris County Demonrat politicians turned on her, but of course for the wrong reasons. She had dialed back some of the reforms to fix her public image which infuriated Demonrats hell bent on their disastrous CJ "reform" agenda. She also investigated corrupt Demonrats and prosecuted them (e.g. Harris County judge's staff who bid rigged COVID money).

In the March 2024 Demonrat primary, a former prosecutor defeated Kim Ogg 75% to 25%. She is still the DA, but won't be on the ballot in November.
