ridgeratAir Force Son Being PCSed to Nellis AFB. Need neighborhood recommendations.
My son has been based at Kadena AFB in Okinawa for the last 5 years, and has just received orders he will be transferred to Nellis AFB near Las Vegas. He has asked me to help him find some good options for offbase housing.
He would prefer a townhouse or single family house near the base, in a good neighborhood. He would like to hit a $2,000/month budget if possible.
Can any of our local members here help with ideas of neighborhoods that fit? And those to avoid? Also, any other helpful information you might add.
He is into judo and working out regularly, so that type of thing would be a plus.
Thank you!

vinnybassAlmost everything on the Nellis side of town is latino community. Small enclave exceptions exist around (Sunrise Manor) Hollywood and Lake Mead, Hollywood and Charleston, but these are small neighborhood specific & still include going through the aforementioned areas regularly.
I'm guessing others posted at the base know of specific neighborhoods more occupied by airmen. This is where I'd look.

jer830It will be a drive with all the traffic and road construction, but I’d suggest going south through LV past the strip area. Seems these days a lot of the crime problems seem to be in north LV.

sigmonkeyUSAF does not have "sponsers" anymore?
Used to be the best thing since pockets for PCS.

drill sgtWhat happened to the "sponsor" program ??? (US Army for my PCS)... When someone equal or greater rank at your next PCS ( permanant change of station) that had been assigned to help give you heads up information about your upcoming move to that duty station and to help you get checked-in and aclimated once you arrive... My sponsor helped with my PCS from Ft. Sill, Okla. going to Ft. Greely, Alaska... Very helpful especially since I would be arriving not later than December 27th. Everybody at my new PCS thought I would be allowed a Christmas Drop..... Not having to report till some time after the fist of the January but the Pentagon said no Christmas dropbut actually arrived the morning of 24th December... Had authorization to travel by personal vehicle driving the Alaskan (Alcan Hwy) during winter...A Experience all in itself. ..................................... drill sgt.

LS1 GTOThat is a town, on a whole, which I do not slow down in while driving my Hellcat.
Only time I stopped to get gas in in the area and I was met with more than a few ghetto types eyeballing my car - hard - and not in a way which was making me comfortable.
Now I get gas in Primm and the next stop is St. George UT.
USAF should, akin to the USN, have a sponsor. The sponsor should be able to give the best info (unless we have someone here who actually lives in the area.

Sacramento JohnsonBeen here nearly 30 years.
Find a nice place on the Northwest side of town; stay west of I-95 and north of Summerlin Parkway. Easy to get over to Nellis AFB; go north on I-95, then east on the 215 beltway to where it hits I-15, then he can figure out if he wants to go north or south to finally exit and get to the base. This route in the morning is opposite traffic and quite fast, at least till one gets to I-15. The reverse in the evening maybe a bit more congested, but nothing like trying to get into the city in the am or out of it in the pm on any expressway here. As for areas directly around Nellis AFB; I'd avoid them...

I-95 is a major N-S route along the East Coast of the U.S., between Florida and Maine.

ridgeratThanks everyone. Yes, the Air Force does still have a sponsor program, and I'm sure they will be in contact as soon as he knows the transfer date. We know he's going there, and are speculating Sept or Oct.
In the meantime, it's also great to hear thoughts and opinions from folks that know the area well..

As another Nevadan, admittedly currently in Reno, this is the best advice I've got as well.

adorStay away from Nellis neighborhood. I live near Aliante area. Drive to Nellis is easier via 215 beltway freeway. Commute from Summerlin area will be quite a drive, as well as near downtown Vegas area.
Look around Aliante area. Yes, there is Aliante Casino. But there is place called Aliante, zip code 89084. Near Cosco, DMV, near VA Hospital. Nellis AFB have their own hospital inside for active personnel.

I don’t doubt that at all! The neighborhood around Nellis is garbage.

Was out there several years ago on a motorcycle event, we Stayed at the Aliante Casino. Nice place, and the area around it seemed nice enough plenty of new at the time retail outlets, and lots of home developments, and it's close to The Clark County Shooting Complex and a Costco..

Lived there for 2009 to 2020 and still visit often with friends in the area. This is pretty solid advice above. Summerlin is also good and most of Henderson is good if he can stand the commute.

Sacramento JohnsonYes, sorry about the 95 name confusion!
I just call it 95 when I talk with locals; should not have put an I in front of it.
