"LAPD spent millions on 'green' electric BMWs used for joyrides to nail salons, day lunches: report"

I can think of no better use for a police department electric BMW car than a trip to the nail salon. You sure don't want shitty looking nails when you outreach to the community and stuff.

From the article:
quote:
When CBS showed LAPD Deputy Chief Jorge Villegas video of the officer using a department-owned BMW to head to the nail salon, he said it “doesn’t appear to be” appropriate and promised to look into the matter.

Villegas said that overall, the electric car program has been successful, CBS reported.

quote:
Mileage logs obtained by CBS News revealed that many of the cars were underused, posting only a few thousand miles in a fourteen-month period. One of the cars had only 400 miles in that approximate timeframe, according to CBS.

Police sources told the network that officers were reluctant to use the cars because they can only go about 80-100 miles on a charge.

Just one more case of police brass being on a different planet than police officers. In their defense, going to the nail salon might actually be the only thing those vehicles are useful for.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Many agencies allow their officers to use take home vehicles for all personal use with the exception of titty bars and driving home drunk.

Many other agencies use hybrid or other fuel efficient vehicles for longer trips, such as going to training, etc.

But I doubt any are using electric BMWs for either.

But it is $3M well spent, to save the planet, and the universe. (I wonder if anyone in the LAPD got any kind of a thank you "gift" for the order).

Now, I'm no brass, but I think buying local, nalon salon, versus foreign, say an electric BMW, is more helpful to the community. But what do I know besides having some college business classes

You seem to be implying that there is a boondoggle here? In L.A. California....with expensive green vehicles that only go 80-100 miles per charge....say it isn't so! Wink

Maybe, if the department personnel are too reluctant to use them, they could be donated to illegal aliens to run drugs. What a perfect cover for the drug-runners and at least the vehicles would have some miles put on them. I'm pretty sure that this would be well within standard sanctuary city guidelines.

Why is your suggestion so funny and so scary at the same time. Wink

The exact question and investigation that needs to be undertaken. You can bet palms got greased on that purchase.

New state motto/slogan....California, the land of insanity and corruption. We're guaranteed to fail. Come fail with us.

I know!! Eek Insanity is running strong in Cal. these days and anything goes. The same state that calls itself a sanctuary state, and provides a safe space for God knows who, is the same state the limits it's citizens the ability to buy ammo to protect themselves. That's impossible to square, in my mind.

I could, if I stretch, see hybrid cars for big-city constant stop-and-go driving. But not all-electric.

Judging from the photo of the car, there is no room in the back to transport prisoners. Or even a bitey doggie.
That, in my LEO experience, makes it useless.

What next? Will LAPD be adopting Smart Cars (motorized roller skates) as patrol cars?

flashguy -

Don't suggest that too loudly. NYPD traffic units use them. For what I have no idea, but they probably suck less than the Cushman motorized scooters.

I don't see a problem in general, however, with using BMWs, Mercedes Benz, or even Porsche vehicles (mostly SUV/crossover body style.) I'm sometimes jealous of the "nicer" cars that our compatriots in Europe use as marked vehicles. That said, I don't think those patrol vehicles usually have partitions.

An X3, X5, or a Porsche Macan or Cayenne? Hell yes. Highway patrol in a 3-series or 5-series? Sign me up.

That's an outrage.

How do they expect drunk officers to get home from titty bars?

I took a bus home from the titty bar.

Which was sorta strange, because I had never driven a bus before, and the next morning I wasn't sure how to get it out of my yard.

So stupid, I’m so sick of faux environmentalists. The pollution it took to manufacture all these unneeded cars will far eclipse any remotely possible emission savings. So LAPD spent millions of tax payer dollars to do more harm to the environment. Roll Eyes
