I needed a Windows 10 laptop for some astrophotography software and related applications. I really didn't want to spend much money though. I happened across a MicroCenter ad for a refurbished 15.6" HP with an 8th Generation Intel Core i3, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD, an optical drive, Touchscreen (I think), aluminum case, and Windows 10 home edition. It was $279, or $256 if you were approved for one of their store cards. The SSD is an M.2 SATA, which I figure I can upgrade to a 256 GB SATA if I ever want to. I don't think it will support an M.2 NVME but that's not a big deal. Since I have a store nearby I stopped in and asked to look one over before buying and they let me take it out of the box. There was not a scratch or ding anywhere. It looked brand new in fact. I was surprised. I don't typically (maybe never) buy second hand, especially refurbished electronics, but for the price I couldn't resist. Its more than adequate to run the apps I need. In fact its pretty dang fast. The only downside for me is that it only supports 2 GHz WiFi but so far that hasn't been an issue. I did some research on the model number, HP 15-da0012dx, to try and figure out their cryptic model numbers. They make no since. Apparently the "dx" at the end indicates it was a BestBuy laptop. Not that that matters. I'm actually pretty happy with Windows 10 too. My work laptop got upgraded recently and it has Windows 10 on it and I like it so far. Anyway, if you haven't checked out MicroCenter before you might consider taking a look. They won' beat out Amazon prices on comparable laptops but they do seem to have decent sales once in a while. I was looking at a higher priced Core i5 a while back that was on sale for less than I could find anywhere online but it was still more than I wanted to spend on a laptop at the time. | ||
