I know a lot of the members here do heroic work every day.

What I do is just pedestrian, but sometimes it gets sporty.

erjpilot will not be impressed, because he sees it more than I do, but I have the footage!

Was this over Texas by chance? Because the weather got pretty rowdy last night around 2am?

That's a different perspective from the cockpit. It almost looked like each flash was a mirror image in each windscreen.

Nothing pedestrian about operating a highly complicated piece of machinery with hundreds of people's lives in your hands, sir. I salute you and all the competent pilots everywhere.

That sort of reminds me of a time I was flying into Atlanta (passenger on a commercial flight, I wasn't flying the plane). It was nearly midnight and a line of T-storms had gone through there earlier in the day and moved off to the north. We were approaching from due west.

We were above the cloud layer and from the left side of the plane I saw literally hundreds of flashes. Not lightning bolts but flashes of light within the clouds. Like hundreds of different colored flashbulbs going off at random. I didn't even own a smartphone at the time, so no video of it but I wish I had one.

Thanks Patrick for the embed.

And that's a 777 going into Memphis a couple of weeks ago.

The piloting reference helped. For a minute there, I thought you were maybe Thor. Airline pilot is pretty cool, though.

Nnnnnnope!! erjpilot is STILL impressed by St. Elmo’s fire dancing across the windscreens!!!! Eek Eek That is the EXACT time I get knots in my stomach the size of basketballs…night flying around T’storms. I HATE that crap!!!!! Mad

Looks like an Airbus??? Chime doesn’t sound familiar. “CLEARED DIRECT BLUUZ”. Yup! Been over that waypoint a gazillion times!!

Good stuff! At least it wasn’t severe turbulence…

ETA: ooops…nevermind. See where you posted B777 into Memphis.

^^^^ That's what I was thinking (RE: Skins comment). Looks more like simulator training than an actual event.

Ohhhhh no. All too real, I’m afraid. Pucker factor 11 for me, depending what I see on the radar…

I don’t think it’s lightning. Rather, it’s electrical/static discharge off the windscreens due to the surrounding atmospheric conditions. The windscreens are continually heated by AC power and I’m sure that generates some type of reaction to create this phenomenom. Not an engineer, so that just BARELY scratches the surface…
