Iowa gets a new submarine , I did not know that
SSN -797 newly commissioned .

There are a dozen You Tube vids about it ,
I didn't know which one to post.

And it's the fourth war ship to be named Iowa.

I guess they are naming big subs after states now (probably for many years now). A few years ago, the USS South Dakota was commissioned too.

They started that with Ohio-class subs back in the 80s-90s:

Ohio
Michigan
Florida
Georgia
Rhode Island (renamed to Henry M. Jackson)
Alabama
Alaska
Nevada
Tennessee
Pennsylvania
West Virginia
Kentucky
Maryland
Nebraska
Rhode Island (II)
Maine
Wyoming
Louisiana

Then it continued with the Virginia-class subs in the 00s-20s:

Virginia
Texas
Hawaii
North Carolina
New Hampshire
New Mexico
Missouri
California
Mississippi
Minnesota
North Dakota
John Warner
Illinois
Washington
Colorado
Indiana
South Dakota
Delaware
Vermont
Oregon
Montana
New Jersey
Iowa

It will continue with further Virginia-class subs under construction:

Massachussets
Idaho
Arkansas
Utah
Oklahoma
Arizona

And they will finish up all 50 states (plus D.C.) with the first two upcoming Columbia-class subs:

District of Columbia
Wisconsin

Before switching to naming new subs after US cities/regions, with the following already authorized:

Groton
Long Island
San Francisco
Miami
Baltimore
Atlanta
Potomac
Norfolk
Brooklyn

I was on the USS JEFFERSON CITY, SSN-759.

Los Angeles class subs were also named after capital cities

Ahhh, for the days of the Guppy and the Halibut and the Permit. Those were the names.

My first boat was the USS GREENLING SSN-614, yes, early fast attacks named after fishies.

I'm glad they are out of the trap of naming them after individuals and then having it blowback on the ship when the PC police got agitated. I was on SSN-687, the Richard B Russell, named after a Georgia Governor and US Senator. He apparently co-authored a statement that discouraged desegregation, and opposed the Civil Rights Act...

Then you may like to hear that once the states are finished, the next four Virginia-class subs before they go to city names will be the Barb, Tang, Wahoo, and Silversides, all borrowing the names of honored WW2-era subs.

There have still been a couple subs in the past few decades named after people.

I mentioned the the Ohio-class Henry M. Jackson earlier (renamed from its original Rhode Island), which was named after a Democratic Senator from Washington.

There are also a couple Virginia class subs mixed in with all the state names, the John Warner and the John Dalton, both named after former Secretaries of the Navy.

I suppose there's no pressing need for new battleships to be named after states, so might as well give them to subs.

That is pretty cool, my Dad was a plank owner on the third Iowa, BB61. Glad to see we have a new sub with that name. And soon we will have SSN 802 the Oklahoma, that name hasn't been used in a long time.

I only pay taxes so that’s my only dog in the fight. But I prefer the subs to be named after agressive fish and sharks. Carriers should be named after presidents. Do we still run battleships or just destroyers and other attack boats to defend a carrier groups? Those ‘lesser’ ships should be named after cities or states and the lesserest of ships named for soldiers/congressmen etc.

Los Angela’s class subs were named after cities cuz fish don’t vote………
Seawolf class subs - after the Cold War were Seawolf, Cooecticut and Jimmy Carter.

Battleships are history, all just museum ships now. Too bad, the 16" guns were great for shore bombardment, the shells could not be shot down or jammed. And the armor made them a very tough ship. But for carrier group defense the modern cruisers, destroyers and frigates take care of that now.

There’s a boomer named the Wyoming, and a fast attack named the Cheyenne. The crew of the Cheyenne attends Frontier Days every summer, hosted by a friend I’ve made on the rodeo committee who was COB on the Cheyenne.
