Case by case - depends on what I'm buying and where. But usually I'll gravitate toward a checker. Self service machines tend to be problematic for me as above comments have noted.

It all depends upon what is most convenient to me.

If I've only got one or two items, then yes I do.

If more than a few items then I use a cashier.

EXCEPTION: After 10 p.m. my local grocer shuts down the cashier's line and self checkout is the only option...

Same here. I find the biggest drawback in the self check out line is customers who don't know how to use the machine.

I self checkout because I like doing things for myself, and it's fun.

Personally, I rarely use them. My belief is that the young workforce needs beginning jobs to get hands on experience. Cashier is one such job. There used to be guys that pumped your gas as well. In PA we now, for the most part, pump our own gas.

I see the self check out as taking away potential employment.

Most recently I see McD's as testing some kind of "Self ordering Kiosks" for customers to place their orders. Again, fewer employees, more profits but I hope the idea is a bust.

I see senior citizens running registers as well. If they can't afford to retire (which many apparently can't) this is a job they can do. I do not look down on these employees as it could well be me in that position. I am pleased they have work.

Do you use the self check out? Why?

Throughout history jobs have been replaced by technology. No need to be romantic about it. Masons, farmers, secretarys, etc... all arbitraged out by technology.

To answer the question, its faster.

I value my time. Whichever is quicker. I remember shopping at the store with my mother as a child when everything had to be punched into the cash register. She always knew which checker was the fastest, and to never let the few guys working there check you out, because they were slow. Stores used to send people to "cashier school", where the checkers practiced the manual dexterity skills necessary, the math skills and how to deal with quick change artists.

There is a standing joke here, of three hundred Walmart stores closing, and three cashiers losing their jobs.

Yeah, I want to eat food with my hands after touching that kiosk screen that 1200 people before me, with questionable hygiene, have touched.

I'm with you here I don't like touching things other people of touched, especially right before eating.

Some of you guys crack me up.

Regarding the self check out thingies, I've often wondered how much stores lose in theft at these things. It would be quite easy to just toss items in the bag without scanning them.
Only if you don't have the bag on the shelf provided--it would notice an item being added without a scan. Of course, one could scan a low-priced item instead and place the higher-priced one in the bag.

I nearly always have some kind of a scan problem the few times I've used them, so avoid the self-scanners.

Regarding sanitation at fast-food places: most of them have facilities where one can wash up before eating if one desires to.

If there is a young lady with a nice butt, I usually get in line behind her. It's one of the few times you can stare at the butt of a hot stranger without getting smacked or going to jail. If the clerk is inefficient or a customer has a whole shitload of coupons, no big deal.

I'm retired. My time is not valuable. Wink

I am surprised no one has stated that their butler and maid do the shopping and they have no idea.

I recall a story in which the elder President Bush went to the grocery store and was amazed to see the technology. He had never seen a bar code scan before.

All the ones I have used have the bags on scales and after you scan the item it checks for the exact weight of what you scanned. If you put something on the scale/bag stand without scanning it or the item you put on there is the wrong weight, it throws up an error that requires a CSR to check/unlock.

Also, each station has a dedicated camera so I'm guessing the loss is low compared to their other areas.

That was fake news spread before the days of any alternative news sources to put the truth out there. Even the vile left wing Snopes had to admit that story was not true.

The ones I've used also allow you to skip bagging any item and place it directly into the cart negating the scale.

It's usually faster than the other lines. If I have more than a few items I will wait in a line with a cashier.
