I would like to print out portions of the family tree selectively, and am having trouble identifying which programs allow this. Even better would be software that allows insertion of photos or scans of documents which could be selectively inserted.

As an example, following back through 14 generations showing where four original people in the 1600's flowed down to one couple 6 generations ago, and then down to my grandkids.

It isn't clear from the internet if MacFamilyTree or other programs will do what I need.

Using a word processor is tedious and doesn't draw nice lines. The online sites such as FamilySearch don't allow selection or deselection of parts of the tree for printing. It will do one branch or another, but not two branches at the same time on the same screen.

My father passed in 2020 (FU Gov Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio), leaving me with a lot of family history documents, old photos, and even audio recordings of long-dead relatives. Ultimately the goal is to create books to send to various family members, using a service such as Shutterfly.

iMac is my platform. Thanks for any suggestions.

Is ancestry.com Mac compatible?

They have a pretty robust software and great access to records. Not sure of their pricing though.

I also don't know if it will do what you are looking for but my wife has been using Family Tree Maker for decades.

I am currently using FamilyTreeMaker 2019(owned by Ancestry now), for Mac.

It allows for insertion of photos, and any other document you can get digitized.

There are multiple options to create reports and charts. It sounds like you are describing their "Pedigree Chart" which starts with an individual, then works backward for both sides of the ancestors. You can print as far back as you have the relatives, but you will get multiple pages that have match points on each page so you can make one big chart if you want.

You can also access Ancestry online (for a fee of course) and the FamilyTree software can upload and download changes to Ancestry. So, you can do work in the software off line, then can "synch" the online Ancestry charts with the off line Family Tree software. Also works vice versa, work on line in Ancestry, then sync with the software on your Mac.

I use Reunion which allows various printing options. Very easy to use, can attach pictures and allows various annotations.

Can the pedigree chart be streamlined to only include specific branches? I want to follow back to 4 specific couples. They were Mayflower passengers and are my direct ancestors 14 generations back. Those 4 families intermingled along the way, coming together about 8 generations before me. Some of the people in the middle generations also have interesting stories.

So I do not want some huge blueprint that includes hundreds of names and branches, just essentially 4 straight lines that merge into one, all on 1 page, or possibly spread across 2 adjacent pages in a book.

There are several different reports and there is some customization of the output available, but I do not see anything like what I am envisioning you are wanting.

Good luck on your quest, and I am sure those family members will appreciate what you are doing
