Carl is a career change dog (he was being trained to be a service (mobility) dog) and right at the 2 year mark when they determine what the official job would be, he hurt his back - they anticipated that he would be likely candidate to re-injure himself and thus could no longer be considered for a service dog. I should note that they weren't exactly sure what the issue was - at the time a specialist was suggesting that a MRI or CAT scan might be needed.
When we picked him up, he had just come off some anti-inflammatories, and had been restricted to the amount of activity for a couple weeks prior to that. We haven't had him to the vet yet, but he's been getting noticeably better. We started out with limiting walks to 10-15 minutes and have slowly worked up to a 30 minute walk and a few minutes of playtime in the backyard on a long line/leash. After the vet visit, we'll most likely slowly start working on some core strengthening therapy (exactly what is unknown at this time).
We are beyond tickled to welcome Carl to the family .
