RIP Joe Galloway, a brave man. Place your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark. “If in winning a race, you lose the respect of your fellow competitors, then you have won nothing” - Paul Elvstrom "The Great Dane" 1928 - 2016

Followed the link provided by Flash. Learned that in 1998, Galloway was awarded the Bronze Star with “V device,” for his heroism in risking his life in aiding wounded soldiers at Ia Drang. The only civilian during the Vietnam War to be awarded the Bronze Star for heroism by the U.S. Army. I’ve always liked Barry Pepper as an actor, and I think he did a great job as Galloway in the movie We Were Soldiers… _______________________________________________________ despite them

This really saddens me. I know he carried the scars and trauma of his experience in the Ia Drang valley until his last day. Some years back, I watched an interview of his where he recounted the incident with PFC Jimmy Nakayama...it might have been on Ken Burns' "The Vietnam War". To this day, Mr. Galloway still cried over that event. I wept with him. RIP, Mr. Galloway. May you find peace and joy. Give my regards to LTG Moore, PFC Nakayama, and the rest of the 7th Cav... Could not agree more! "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

I’ll never forget in a college history class we were assigned to read his and Hal Moore’s book We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young: Ia Drang - the Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam. If you have not read their book I HIGHLY recommend it. Of all the books I was assigned to read (history majors read a lot of books) theirs is the one that sticks out in my memory the most. Rest in Peace Mr Galloway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The price of liberty and even of common humanity is eternal vigilance
