To go or not to go - Neighborhood meeting

General, cable for this purpose, when on private property, does not involve lots of digging. In my neighborhood, they used a lawn edger, set to about 6 inches, to dig a slot for the cable, less than a half inch wide. They tucked the cable into it and neatly covered it with dirt. I threw some seed over it the next morning, and in less than a month you couldn't tell it had happened.

FO is a bit different, at least down here, they ran a conduit first, large orange pipe to the boxes, which the guys from South Central America dug holes by hand. The conduit was pulled through with a machine, shook the ground, then the FO through the conduit, box to box.

Here's the conduit sticking out next to the box after they hit a city water line that wasn't properly marked, in fact it wasn't even on any blueprints or maps at the city.

Flooded the yard for over a month with the contractor saying they did nothing, and the city saying there isn't anything there until we got it dug down and a 25 foot geyser was spewing city water into the air.

The black cable is the old phone/cable company line they pulled up as well..

No comprende' senior...

In all of my years working for utility companies I can tell you there is no limit to the stupidity and ignorance you will experience . Some people just refuse to see anything other than their own way , and some will get really hostile about it . Having the Sheriff there is probably not a bad idea just to keep some folks civil .

There are several rules to a happy life that my Dad taught me ~ one being, Don't talk to the crazies!!!

Your crazy neighbors will never let this go. By all means, go to the meeting and defend your property and the services you want or don't want. There is no reason to defend the County, they pay people to do that.

Friends of mine in the outskirts of Atlanta had to fight a group of neighbors that tried to form a Homeowner's Association because they wanted to force everyone to pay to buy a vacant home, tear it down, and build a dog park. Because that group had the local city council member on board, it almost went thru before others found out and worked with those that didn't have dogs or the desire to be forced into a HOA to stop it.

Go to the meeting and defend your property and the services you want or don't want - Just don't talk to the crazies!!!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advise.
Yes they buried/pulled that orange pipe in a loop through the whole neighborhood. A few times they had to dig it due to bolders and rocks, but mostly they used the horizontal drilling machine to bury it.
When they run it to the house it is just folded into the ground I had a hard time even seeing where they buried it coming from the street.
The complaining seems to be the initial install in January, some were really bent out of shape about it. I am genuinely curious what they will be saying. The few neighbors who have talked to me seem to just be curious about when they could sign up.

What's more amazing to me is how did those people survive this long? It amazes me at how long idiocy can live.

Really good advice. It's non confrontational. I would add "impact the utility easement" and have them define a "utility."
Great advice on asking a non-confrontational leading question.

I would go and defend, fuck the haters. I just bought 5 acres in a rural area and the biggest point for me buying it was fiber at the curb. I do not like the LEC at all, but fiber is a requirement of mine for work, and for non-work. Symmetrical bandwidth cannot be understated. ISP service is like kwh, or H2O, another required utility for living life. They need to just quit with the Karen bullshit.

I'm having a tough time really following what is going on here. The conduit and fiber is already in. Did they do that work without getting permission or an easement from the property owners? Or are the boxes and FO all in rights of way?

Around here they just string it on the poles that carry electric, telephone and cable.

I have been to many meetings in my life. Now that I am self employed I can send my regrets. Unless there is an agenda there is no point. I understand easments and utility companies.

Well that's a relief because I thought from the name it was one of these Chicom telecom companies trying to set up shop like they've been doing around the world.

I thought the big dream for true 5G is it would replace the need for new fiber.

At least that's what they told us when 5G was being rolled out.

They installed the conduit and the fiber back in January. Some were pissed and want compensation for damage done. The affected areas were seeded and the boxes are flush. Nearly a zero evidence they ever were here. But some really are worked up over it. One lady is running for counsel. They want change.

They really didn't seem to know what a utility easement was. But hey there was free pizza and beer so it was all good Smile
