I have been using TWP 1500 stain in cedar color. It seems I am having to stain the deck every year. I am doing the proper prep work by cleaning, stripping if needed, brightening then staining. Does anyone have a good stain that is durable and that can hold up to two small dogs? The stain is also fading in certain areas so the dogs are the only issue. In war, truth is the first casualty. Not sure any stain is going to be much of an improvement in your situation. I just used a Valspar semi-transparent from Lowes on a large cedar outdoor wood project. Seems to be decent but time will tell. Truthfully, Choice Deck or another similar composite is really the only answer.

We really want to go composite but the cost is out of reach for us at this time. I would like to go a darker stain b/c they are supposed to hold up better over time but the wife loves the cedar color. In war, truth is the first casualty. Aeschylus Greek tragic dramatist (525 BC - 456 BC)

Nothing holds up very well on decks. I would buy the best penetrating semi-transparent stain you can get and plan on doing it every 1-3 years. Semi-transparent stains simply soak in leaving the surface slightly tinted, the pigment is really what protects the wood from UV. After it gradually wears off it's time to clean and reapply. Solid stains (or paint) with their higher pigment load offer more UV protection. But on a horizontal wood surface they start peeling after a time, then you're into scraping. I have tried about 4 different brands over many years and have found nothing durable. Right now my deck needs sanded and refinished. Hard to sand with screws in the wood, without tearing up your paper. NRA Life Endowment member Tri-State Gun collectors Life Member

I’ve been using Flood CWF-UV for several years. The deck needs another application but not badly. It lasted 3 summers so I can’t complain.

I used Thompsons water seal (transparent), it really only lasts a year, but super easy to apply with just a pump up spray bottle sprayer.

Don't think I would try sanding. Lots of good strippers out there. No "stain" is going to last very long. I prefer the lighter stains that let the grain of the wood show. I used Thompsons light stain last year after stripping off some heavier stain. Only lasts one summer. Already gave deck a light power wash this year and its ready for new coat. Waiting on the right weather. I would never use any of that really thick paint on a deck.

Consumer Reports has Olympic Elite solid as the best. Underneath the product is a fairly long list of mixed reviews with plenty of dissatisfyed users of it. #2 On their list is Behr Deckplus Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain. Similar list of "awesome" and complaints under it. Such as: "Will never buy a Behr Deckover product again Submitted 7 months ago By Rick From Albany, OR Behr Deck-over, bought 18 months ago, is the worst product we have ever used on any wood. ..." So who can say.

We have a darker solid color on our desk and in the summer that thing will light you up it gets so hot. Bad for the dog. We have to use carpet runners. I'd go with lighter colors and semi transparent if possible. We have used Flood and Behr. Not much difference. Between the dog and snow shoveling, they wear a lot. Thompsons can get a little slick in my experience.

Beer Silicone Deck Stain is terrible unless they changed the formula. Flaked off in 1 yr.

I used Flood CWF-UV Cedar on a 20' trailer I use for hauling my 6,000 Kubota. I was just looking to help keep water from soaking into the boards, but it also ended up looking pretty, and seems pretty tough compared to most deck stains. ________________________________________________________ You never know...

Not a stain, but Behr Deck Over sucks. Ask me why.

Shit don't mean shit |
I'm in the same situation. I've lived in my house 12 years. I have 1,000 sq feet of deck. When we bought the house the deck looked like absolute shit. The boards were cupped and lifting. I spent a few weeks re-screwing the entire deck with 3" screws, then rented a sander. It looked AMAZING for 2 years. I re-stain every 2 - 3 years, but nothing holds up. I've tried Benjamin Moore (my favorite brand), Behr and I think Olympic. I'd like to tear it all out and go with composite, but that's a huge bill for 1,000 sq feet. Higher content solids (darker) hold up better, but what's the point in having beautiful cedar if you stain it dark? My first pass with the sander back in 2010, looks so good...

Because after doing all the prep that they recommended and following all directions to the T after one year it has begun to peel. Even found out that their is a class action pending due to this issue. So now the new cans stay new and improved.
