My wife goes through these small vacuums like bags of chips. We have had Black & Decker, Bissel, Electrolux, etc. We have not had a Dyson, she just won't spend that kind of money for that. They all either have the batteries go bad, just stop working or parts break or disappear. So, we are in the market for another one.

I figured I'd ask the Sigforum Braintrust. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Not helpful, but we have one of the Dyson cordless stick vacuums, and it's been great.

It seems like besides Dyson, Shark always comes out on the top of recommended vacuum lists.

Consumer Reports likes the Bissell Air Ram 1984 and Shark Rocket IX140 best in the over 6 pounds (and under $400) category, with the Bissel being better around the edges of rooms and the Shark being more reliable. They like the Hoover ONEPWR Blade Max BH53350 best in the under 6 pounds (and under $400) category.

They actually rate the Dyson sticks very poorly for reliability.

Add up the total cost of all the ones you have gone through and you are probably at or near the cost of the Dyson. Buy once, cry once. I have the cordless and corded Dyson and have been happy with both and have had them for 8+ years.

Unknown, but I just helped a relative choose a Breville Compact Wave™ Soft Close 0.9 Cu. Ft. Microwave in silver (BMO650SIL1BUC1). Very nice. At $200, it was $80 more than the nicer compact Sharp and Panasonic units.

But I was not selling her on $200, only on $80.

Pennies a day over her expected (lifetime) usage.

And the Best Buy sales gal had not yet heard of "Buy once, cry once" but said she'd "remember that".

I have had good luck with the cordless Dyson V6, V8 and V10 models. I buy the factory reconditioned ones off of Woot. I have 3 and have had no problems so far.

If you have hard floors (tile, wood, concrete, etc.), I have an alternate suggestion...

We have hard floors throughout the main central area of our house, and we switched back to manually sweeping, using a broom and a stationary floor vacuum receptacle like they use in hair salons. It's actually faster and more convenient than digging out a vacuum cleaner, and surprisingly does a better job of clearing dirt/dust/pet hair from the hard floors than our previous standard rolling vacuum did, especially in the nooks and under/around furniture.

we tried a few cheaper cordless vacuums - all were as you described. We finally broke down and got the Dyson V8 stick vacuum with the hard floor brush head (we have all hardwood/tile except for one room). It works great. Been over a year and still going strong. The hard floor brush picks up sand etc that was always a hassle with other vacuums. It was not cheap, but it's been a much better unit than any of the others we tried.

I appreciate all the info. I completely agree with the buy once, cry once. Unfortunately, she does not. If I were buying it, I would just get the Dyson and be done with it.

The Shark may be a good compromise.

I have never looked on Woot but just did. They have a refurbished Dyson today for $189. I sent it to her via email. We'll see what happens.

Spend the money on the Dyson. You get what you pay for.

Mine has paid for itself.

I have the Dyson cordless on a yacht, it's a year old. it does a good job on hard wood flooring and is light and easy to use. However, it only lasts 10-15 minutes and the battery is dead.

I have Shark traditional vacuum at my house. I really like the Shark products. I believe Bed Bath and Beyond has a 30 or 60 day no questions asked return policy on vacuums and can use the 20% off coupon, so give the Shark a shot and if you don't like it swap it for a Dyson. They have really good deals on Dyson right now (BB+B).

You guys just cost me money.... I ordered the Dyson off of Woot.

I have a Dyson Animal that has worked well for years. I have replaced a couple parts like the hose as it finally got a hole in it after 12 years of use.

Dyson does make a superior product. I bought a cheapie from Amazon - forget the brand. It works pretty well. My son gave us his old Dyson, and it is much better. I don't know if it is 4 times better, which is the price difference, but it is better.

We have both the Dyson Ball and Dyson Stick, it's convertible into the hand held unit, bought on Woot and it's been a good machine.

The biggest issue is that they seal up tight so the filter can get a little stale smelling, so open it up when it's charging (pop the top open for circulation)

Jimmy if that thing only runs 10=15 minutes then the battery is kaput... Just replace it, I had to do it on ours after a couple of years of use.

I've heard the Shark is good, but no experience with it.

After experiences like the OPs, I gave up on small vacuums and bought the smallest Shop Vac they make. I mainly use it on my hardwood floors to pick up the dirt on them. Less expensive and is going strong after 4 years.

Been looking at the Dysons. Want a cordless convenience but hesitant about the reported ~30 min capacity.

Why can't you buy it? I'd go with Dyson....and did.

FWIW a friend has a cordless Shark and likes it a lot.

Yeah, have to reiterate this. Have hardwood floors and hairy dogs...need a good vac.

Bought an $80 Chinese made vac on Amazon...crapped out after a few months. The beater brush stopped turning. Left a scathing review on Amazon and got my money back.

Costco had the Dyson V8+ Animal for $299 about six months ago and I bought it...its been amazing. Bite the bullet and do it..you absolutely wont regret it.

There's no doubt the corded Dysons are top notch. I recently bought a new Shark pet vacuum and it handled my 100 lb Doberman/rottweilers hair with ease and replaced a 10 year old Shark that the hose went bad on. The Shark beats the Dyson hands down in included attachments and overall flexibility. But both are great products.
