A couple of nights ago, one of our cats came flying through the pet door growling. I knew something was up so I looked at the security cameras and caught a glimpse of a bobcat chasing one of our other cats under my 4Runner. I went outside and was able to spot it several times on the outskirts of my yard. It was pretty bold.
If we didn't have the pet door, it's a good chance we would have lost one of our furry family members.
The first pic shows it under the pet door in the window.

They are hungry and small animals are on the menu. I have a lot of them in my neighborhood, and in my backyard from time to time.

A Bobcat got into with my neighbors Maine coon cats last month. They did a number on one another. The bobcat hasn't been back since.

You had better hope the bobcat doesn't come through the cat door at full throttle in pursuit of one of your house cats. That will be a real shitshow.

We had a tough as nails Maine Coon that lived for over 15 years. It weighed over 20 pounds. It fought all the time. We even had a owl claw removed from his shoulder.

Based on the videos, I would guess this bobcat is in the 30-35 pound range.

Why domestic cars don’t need to be “outdoor” cats.

NP, sigmonkey.
We've been lucky.
We just don't believe they need to stay locked up inside the house all the time. We have a couple that are over 15 years old and come and go as they please.

Bobcats are pretty amazing animals.

Whether you think they need to be “locked up” or not, does not change the fact that domesticated animals (cats/dogs) do not have the capacity and instincts to survive and thrive in the “outside” environment.

Perhaps study the empirical data and then take an informed/educated position.

“We” (mankind) have changed the reality for dogs/cats (birds etc.) and we “owe” them any sacrifice an/or inconvenience that they do not suffer needlessly for our choice to change there nature and environment.

So anyone that lets their dogs and cats outside without being on a leash in the country is un-informed and uneducated. Gotcha.

Do you have a contingency plan in place in case this happens when:
  • you're home?
  • you're gone but wife/kids home?

Damn sigmonkey, I really didn't want to turn this thread into a morality discussion on cats and dogs not being able to go outside without a leash in the countryside. Were you this obnoxious in "barn cat" and other threads that discussed dogs and cats running around outside without a leash?
All of our cats were feral or abandoned. We took them in. It took over a year to befriend one of them. We have spend a lot of time building outside shelters and providing food until we could catch and get them to the Vet for a spay/neuter and shots. Don't lecture me.

About two years ago cats started to disappear from our neighborhood. Bobcat, cougar, coyotes, crazy neighbor, who knows. The cats disappearing has stopped but I have a suppressor for my 22 so if the time comes to reduce bobcat/coyote population I can do so discretely (and with necessary licenses). Cougar I will call Animal Control. Crazy neighbor I will hope moves away.

We are rural enough there are chickens, sheep and horses within 2 or 3 houses and there is abundant wildlife. We have a pet door, originally for the dog who has since passed. Now for the cat so the wife or I have to get up at 2:00AM to let her out. Part of getting a cat was to keep the rodent population down and she does a fine job, 2:00AM or any time.

What are the best actions if a bobcat or coyote comes into your yard near your house (when you're in the yard)?

What if it decides to attack you?

What if it is attacking a pet or child?

I read some stuff on the webz about making noises and retreating into the house. But I don't trust the webz entirely and for other more violent situations.

Don't always have a weapon on me, especially my wife, when spending time in the yard.

We have feral cats in our neighborhood that have done fine for decades.

There is a feral smokey gray cat that has been around for at least 8 years. Had a couple of litters. She travels across my property all the time.

A black cat that has been around a while.

There is a lot for them to eat.

Mice, small birds, baby rabbits and bugs.

I have not seem many cat carcasses, there are just too much other easy prey for predictors to eat.

We have fox, coyotes, and hawks for predators.

I have them on my property here.
They've cleaned out all but one cat that knows to stay in the garage at night.

And when I see them, I make sure they stay afraid of people.
(I don't harm them as they eat the rats up at the chicken farm)

I agree totally with you on the quiet .22. I see a coyote and sometimes two running the hood. I chased one off recently cussing loud with ny flash light. Had I a quiet.22 it would have been on its way to the land fill. We got owl's and Hawks which I credit for many of the feral kittens going missing.
