Looks to me like he's setting up in the slot. I think what you're seeing is a combination of camera angle and the catcher moving to set up inside on certain pitches.

Keep watch. He's there (directly behind the plate) about 95% of the time. The other 5% seem to result in questionable calls. Although, at the beginning of the game Smoltz did note this ump had the best ball/ strike rep during the regular season.

PowerSurgeCongrats Nats. They really earned it. Before the playoffs started I didn’t think anyone could beat the Astros.
They’ll have a worthy adversary in my Braves when they finish their rebuilding over the next 6-9 months.

Modern Day SavageMy personal preference will always be to watch good baseball, exciting baseball, and excellence in execution in World Series action...and to see every Series go 7 games. Beyond that, my personal preference and belief is that teams making their first appearance in the WS lose, grow from what they learned in that appearance, stay "hungry"...and come back in a season or two, and win...
Having said that, we got to watch two really excellent teams battle it out to Game 7...mistakes were made, and great baseball was played. Some good commercials (I liked the Buzz Aldrin one), we got to see a fan take a ball to the gut and save his beers without spilling a drop...and we got to see Hooters.
Can't ask for more than that.
Congratulations to both teams and congratulations to the forum Nats fans...your team acquited themselves well!
Now...MLB can get on to the business of the "juiced" ball, and how they are going to address it... or ignore it.
