Our local shelter has a real sweetheart in need of a good home. She is a doll. Maybe 18 months old. Fawn color.
What do we need to know?
Thanks guys and girls.

Their sense of hearing is incredible. They bark at everything and everyone. Very sweet and affectionate dogs. They are also very intelligent. Personally I’m not a fan of small dogs but could see us having one in the future. They’re also afraid of everything.

Nice. I loved our little girl. She gone 8 years now I think and I still miss her.

Very unconditional loving companion. Easy to care for, low maintenance.

My wife adopted one. Didn't have a name yet. Took him to the vet for his first visit and the vet said "He thinks he is 10 feet tall"......... We named him Duke. He did turn tail when the deer would charge him though.
Was a great "doorbell" of anyone that was even near our property.
Lost him to cancer 1 year after my wife passed away from cancer.

He was a very intelligent Chuey. Loved all humans but. Unfortunately I never trained him to love his own kind. He thought he was Napoleon with other dogs.
Was his own personality, not clingy. But never far from me.
Would bark when the door bell rang or someone knock on door and then he would go ballistic.
Gone Dec '22 at the age of 15.

The wife keeps claiming she is going to start moving towards smaller dogs as we age, like a chihuahua, because they cannot pull you over while walking on lead.

But, we still have a GSD and an Irish Wolfhound (and a 17 lb rabbit).

When in doubt, mumble

We rescued one about 5 years ago . He doesn't bark very much .Does not shed or " smell like a dog " . Does not shake like a lot of Chihuahuas . Obsessed with chasing Squirrels . He was obviously abused because he has some trust issues even now .
Chihuahuas tend to have dental issues . Have them looked at . And yes , they do think they're ten feet tall ..

Fearless. Troublemakers Wink barky.
Utterly devoted to their people with a total jaunt to their walk- they may be tiny, but they own it all.
I refer you to the “if the different dog breeds were people” vid. Google it. The imitation of Chihuahua was “do you want to start a fire?” Dead on. Hilarious little dogs.

Daughter brought home a baby, not a puppy, this thing was still being bottle fed.

Mia is a Chiweenie, part Chihuahua part Dachshund, and has warmed up to me pretty good, see her when we go over she's friendly, and they do hear everything and bark warnings quickly.

Here she is in my hand the first day she came home..

In an odd coincidence, all 3 of our rescues are part chihuahua.
Charlie is a chihuahua, dachshund mix.
Molly is a chihuahua, dachshund, pit bull mix.
Katie is a chihuahua, dachshund, miniature poodle mix.

All are sweet dogs. They are all big barkers when someone knocks on the door.

I've never had a Chihuahua but one of my neighbors back in Portland did. Daisy was her name, she had a little red sweater that she wore when they took her on walks. So one day I'm out walking my 100# GSD mix, who did NOT like little dogs at all, and we run into the neighbors out with Daisy. We're standing there talking, my dog is standing quietly beside me, and little Daisy is on the ground bouncing and snarling and yapping like mad at my dog. She actually thinks she wants to take on this monster that's at least a dozen times her size. I finally look down and Sadie is looking up at me as if to say "Can I? Please? I promise I'll make it quick!" I choked up on her leash a little and both dogs survived the meeting. The neighbors seemed totally surprised by Daisy's behavior. "She's NEVER like that around people!". I tend to believe them.

Just like any other dogs, it depends on how they are treated, brought up, etc. They are very loving and territorial and have attitudes much larger than they are. I recently lost my little boy Bailey in January who is a chihuahua, almost 19 years. They can live very long. God Bless Smile

People love them or hate them. They are far too nervous and twitchy for me.

One of the nice things about the Chiweenie, that Shakey nervous trait is non existent

I really love a calm quite dog. That is not a chihuahua, but that is why we have so many different kinds of dogs, people like different things.
Best of luck with your new sweetheart.

They are generally very low maintenance, as with all dogs, stay on top of oral hygiene, get their teeth cleaned annually and get on some kind of brushing schedule like their life depends on it.

Because it does. Small dogs develop abscesses quickly.

They are tough little guys, they don't eat a lot or crap a lot, and they don't ask for much aside from shelter and a good bit of love.

Like all breeds, they have their own set of issues. Generalizations are just that, because some dogs have them and others don't, but they are prone to things like knee issues (patella luxations), hydrocephalus, and a few neurological issues related to their ginormous pumpkins sitting on their tiny bodies, lol.

Keep their teeth clean, because they are not as tolerant of excessive dental decay as their larger counterparts. For the love of Mike, don't overfeed them and make them fat! Other than that, enjoy your new mini-me!
