I had a dental appointment this morning. The only fun thing about that is it’s just a short block from the Chicken Pie Shop. I believe it’s a one-off restaurant – not one of a chain.

Eat in or take out. The take out options are frozen or fresh baked. I got the latter. Danged good! The pies are about 5-1/2” diameter with the crust bulging up. I bought a couple for my good neighbors too.

I never went to the original restaurant as a kid but did frequent the North Park store on the corner of 5th and Robinson with my parents after church on many Sundays. When they moved over to El Cajon Blvd, the pies lost a little something, still very good, but not quite the same. It remains a place one should go if you like chicken.

Holy Cow. I could write a book about this place. The absolute best chicken pies and service for that matter. These are NOT your banquet type chicken pies. They have nothing but meat in them..no veggies. I sit down, order, get up to go to bathroom, come back and it's on your table. Chicken pot pie, smothered in gravy with a huge roll. Fast service. All the waitresses are elderly (like me) and I think it is a requirement management has..hire older responsible vs young and inexperienced??

From North San Diego County where I worked, I would do anything I could to have to make the trip to San Diego. And when I did, my route somehow took me off the direct path to cut inland to the Chicken Pie shop! This is a place not to be missed if you're in the area. And after you finish your meal, you can exit the side room where they have pies to go for sale to take with you.

Thank you Pipe Smoker for letting me reminisce.

Huh. Growing up in San Diego, and having lived there for 20 years (1970s-90s), I have never even heard of the place.

I looked it up on Google maps, and see I have probably driven by it on I-8 at least a thousand times going to the beach.

Next time I am down for a class reunion or visiting family, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for mentioning it.

It’s on the south side of El Cajon Blvd, a half mile west of I-805.

South bound I-805 has an off-ramp to El Cajon Blvd west bound.
