G43 with +2 mags. Slimmer than a j-frame, conceals very easy.

Depending on his size I would get him a G43X MOS. That way he could put a dot on it and keep his manual of arms the same for duty and off duty. I'm not a Glock guy, wife has a G20, but that was my guess. Thank you Tommy

Read his agency's policy, that will narrow your choices in a range from "anything"to "exactly this" ***************************** "I don't own the night, I only operate a small franchise" - Author unknown

I will see if I can find the policy but I think there pretty lax here. I'll reach out to a few officers because I take care of all the k9 officers. Thanks Tommy

Can he carry a back up on duty? I carry a G43 off duty but also on my ankle as a back on duty. The others are just too big for ankle carry. Some guys do carry a back up clipped to their vest so can go bigger. I use mag extensions when off duty/extra mags so usually have 8+1 instead of the standard 6+1.

Shadow Systems CR920X or CR920XP would give an upgrade over the Glock 43X, keep Glock ergos (if he wants), and has standard 15 round mags instead of having to change parts on a 43X to take Shield Arms mags. They also have this policy that I absolutely love: https://shadowsystemscorp.com/support/ Use of Pistol in Self-Defense Situation If you are forced to use your Shadow Systems pistol in a self-defense situation in the United States, it is possible that you will temporarily or permanently lose possession of your Shadow Systems pistol. If your use of your Shadow Systems pistol is deemed legally justified to the satisfaction of Shadow Systems, but the pistol is not returned to you, Shadow Systems will replace your pistol free of charge, to the extent permitted by law. This policy applies to civilians as well as law enforcement line of duty use in cases where the pistol was personally purchased by the officer.

If the on-duty gun is to be a Glock 19, the most obvious choice would be another one, or one of any number (getting hard to keep track of) of the smaller models. Perhaps you could have some kind of commemorative engraved on the slide.

You may not be able to get the policy in your hand, but you can call the department and ask an officer. Frankly many guns are just too large to be ankle carried, and the small ones are difficult to qualify with. When I was training a new baby cop, I’d tell him to wait a year before buying a gun as he might find it’s not what he thought it would be. What he might need right away is another set of cuffs and a copy of the most often charged statutes(it’s a cheat book for wording), and or a waist chain and leg irons-my dept didn’t issue them. Over a career I found that the micro 9 (khar) and j frame worked. Again it’ll be something he will have to qualify on and I’ll tell ya- 100 rnds of full power 357 mag thru a j frame will wear on you. Thanks for all the replies. I'm really proud of him and want to do something special, but want it to be the right thing. He has been shooting since he was about 8 years old and is better than me. Qualification shouldn't be a problem. Love the police academy reference HRK. Thanks all, Tommy

Mike he's already looking for a better set of handcuffs because the issued ones suck. Any suggestions for a source would be appreciated. This is new territory for us. Tommy

If he's been shooting since he was about 8 years old he probably knows what he likes and wants. I'd ask him. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Just got word from one of the local k9 officers that the G43X is the preferred off duty/backup gun. Thank you for all the replies, Tommy

Give him the money. He will be able to purchase through the Glock Blue Label program and get a pretty nice discount for the model he chooses. Were I issued a Glock I'd have kept my G26, or maybe picked up a G26 MOS. I really liked that gun and shot it very well. I carried it on my ankle for almost 10 years in a Galco Ankle Glove. It's a bit bulky but worked well above an 8" boot. It also shares mags with his 19, which is a handy feature for a backup. The 43x and 48 are interesting as well. I have big hands, though, so I prefer shooting the wider grip of the 26/19/17 guns, although the slimline would definitely be nice for off-duty IWB carry. If he gets into guns, he'll probably end up with one of each eventually anyway, especially because the Blue Label program makes them pretty affordable. I agree with Jupiter...find a local Blue Label dealer and give him money to buy it. Better yet, take him there and let him pick out what he wants. Use the savings to buy some ammo and do a range trip together. It'll be a good time with your son and allow him to pick what suits his needs best.
