One of the most perfect aircraft carrier designs ever. She's got a few more cruises in her before she's retired.

Just took images of the Yorktown over the weekend. The Nimitz will be parked somewhere significant, and I hope they create a museum for her like the Yorktown. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

That will never happen. They can't get the reactors out without destroying the ship.

25 knots? Nowhere near top speed. Seeing a carrier move at full speed is amazing. Certifiable member of the gun toting, septuagenarian, bucket list workin', crazed retiree, bald is beautiful club! USN (RET), COTEP #192

Absolutely amazing to see something that big at what “seems” like a relatively slow speed until you realize just how awesome the power is to make something that big move that fast. Couldn’t find the vid I remember showing high speed trials of a carrier (think it was the Ron Reagan) which included shots from the hangar bay during the turns where all you see is sky looking out one side and all you see is water looking out the other through the elevator opening but here is a good vid of the Ford going all out What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

Geez Fellers… You have to manage your wake in the channel. Why don’t y’all post the top speed for us all? "Pacifism is a shifty doctrine under which a man accepts the benefits of the social group without being willing to pay - and claims a halo for his dishonesty." ~Robert A. Heinlein

It's classified. I will say that I happened to be in CIC on a Frigate when the Big E (CVN-65) moved across our screens. The amazement of all present when calculations of speed were noted was something I'll never forget. I’ve heard that they will do in excess of 40 knots/46 mph… Would love to see someone water skiing behind one! Of course if you go down you might be waiting a LONG time for it to turn around and come back to pick you up What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

Looking at life thru a windshield |
Transported a load of money out to her on a pay mission back in the 80's when she came into Wilhelmshaven Germany, Purser took us on a grand tour afterwards. Marines did not want to let us bring our weapons onboard but we said no problem we will take our German marks and Dollars and head home, no fun on shore leave for you. Needless to say problem was quickly resolved. Also got to pay a lot of vouchers from civilian vendors for supplies they took onboard, really mindboggling how much stuff goes into keeping those things up and running. Only Carrier I was ever on and will never forget the experience.

I was on the Big E. Many times on an emergency, it outran its escorts. I saw a picture of the Big E with a rooster tail as high or close to it if not higher than the flight deck. It's nowhere on the internet. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I am a plankowner and was stationed onboard the Stennis, CVN-74, during sea trials. The high speed rudder tests were fun and the top speed is 30+ knots.

It's been a lot of years, 1977 I think, when I had a good friend who had just got out of the Navy to go to College. He said he was on Enterprise and at the start of a cruise the Enterprise just flat out out ran and left the other ships behind. He also said when he got to the San Diego Naval Base to join the Enterprise, he was lost and asked someone where to find it. That person pointed and said See That Big Building Over There? That's the Enterprise. I don't know if he was joking but he said it was true. Phil old buddy, I hope you are still upright and living life large. .

That's the Abraham Lincoln, you can see the 72 quite clearly. I hate offended people. They come in two flavours - huffy and whiny - and it's hard to know which is worst. The huffy ones are self-important, narcissistic authoritarians in love with the sound of their own booming disapproval, while the whiny, sparrowlike ones are so annoying and sickly and ill-equipped for life on Earth you just want to smack them round the head until they stop crying and grow up. - Charlie Brooker

A nuke plant will do that. Allegedly, Enterprise reached up an over that mark, people will swear faster and there's been a few helmsman that have noted the dial couldn't go any further without saying a number. I do know the Enterprise had the fastest hull-form of any carrier, and with two nukes per-shaft (had 8 reactors total), she had a lot of going in her favor for setting speed & acceleration records.
