[Without going into all the trash-talking Jaguar so well deserves lately…]

A beautiful lady I know well has a 2019/2020 XE 25t. It’s a nice ride, honestly. It’s comfortable, it’s quick, and it’s easy on fuel. Naturally, the service costs are somewhat nuts.

This car is due for a periodic service (roughly 75k miles) and I’ve been asked to help her keep the service costs down.
The dealer quoted a “full service” which evidently includes engine and cabin air filter changes, oil and filter change, tire rotation, and replacing brake hoses… for roughly $2200.

Yes, that’s absolutely nuts.

I’m happy to do the filter changes for her, I can do the tire rotation, and I’m very tempted to do the oil change myself. But what the heck is this deal about replacing brake hoses? In roughly 800k miles I’ve driven, over a variety of old and new cars, I’ve never had to replace brake hoses, not to mention doing so preemptively or as part of a “routine” service.

What the heck??

1) Finding a copy of the routine service list (like we’re used to seeing in the back of the owner’s manual, when they actually put printed copies in the cars) is more difficult than Chinese arithmetic.
2) I’m still baffled by this “routine” brake hose change.
3) Damn, that’s expensive! (Yeah, I know… it’s because it’s a Jaguar.)

So. Anyone here got a recent Jag XE or similar in their fleet? Familiar with the service routines? And what’s up with this brake hose change? Is that a necessity, or just an egregious upsell?

God bless America.

I think the "brake hoses" are actually a brake fluid exchange.

^^^^

I’ve been told on several occasions that her local service advisor really ought to be doing something other than advising service, because he appears often to know both jack and doody about cars. Big Grin

Replacement of brake hoses at the 6-year interval does seem to be a thing for Jaguar. However, the practice is widely questioned by owners.

I'm curious if they recommend changing the timing belt, or if they got smart and use a chain.

Thank you very much, kkina. Can you email me that image? I’m unable to enlarge it clearly.

As for timing, I haven’t learned enough about this car yet to know which configuration it’s got.

God bless America.

Is there a local, trusted mechanic who can do the job?

And yes, I absolutely think you could save her a lot of $$ and change the filters and oil.

And since the brakes have to be bled, there's your brake fluid flush. There may be a special procedure involving a scan tool. Personally, I wouldn't mess with the brake hoses, unless of course they are actually bad or going bad. This being a Jag, anything is possible.

Thank you again, kkina. I did receive your email.

As trusted local mechanics go, I’ve had 330k miles worth of good service from my local Nissan. service team. I’ll go talk to those guys shortly about the brake hose/flush thing. I’m not about to take on that job.

Thank you, egregore, for mentioning the likelihood of needing a scan tool once that job is done. I was caught way off-guard when I replaced the battery in a Passat recently and found that I had to “code the battery to the car.” Gone are the days of simple remove-and-replace, huh?

long gone. i have an app that does the battery coding for bmws and i charge people in my area $5 and a cup of coffee for the coding. app has paid for itself. the $5 is to cover gas. lol
it's worked on two of my bmws. f/g series.

now i have to start all over because i bought an alfa.

I'm pretty sure jaguar uses an electronic parking brake. So you'll need a scan tool to retract the caliber. There may be a manual procedure, I don't know.

Leave it to the brits to use a piece of rubber on an otherwise metal pressurized system.

first google search pulls up braded hoses, I suspect such a component would remove the need to se4rvice them.

^Interesting thought. AI says that rubber brake hoses should be replaced at...6 year intervals.

Are the brake hoses on an XE rubber or braided?

Rockauto does not show a 2.5 liter engine, but for the 2.0 turbo hoses are $15-20 each.

FCP Euro shows aftermarket hoses in this range, and OEM Jaguar parts from $150-$200.

So, if the dealer charges list x 4, hoses could be $1000 parts alone.

Grok mentions degradation of the elastomer as a reason to replace.

Grok states that Porsche, VW, BMW and Mercedes Benz all recommend inspection and replacement as required, at the same interval as Jaguar. So, it would seem that brand concerns can be eliminated.

Grok states that European safety standards for hoses are very strict.

Prudence would dictate a good external inspection with a view for bulges upon application of braking pressure. Replace as required within budgetary constraints.

You’re in NOVA, correct?

I have a shop an all the tools you’d need to do that, including the brake lines or brake fluid flush.

I’ll email you my number.

My first dealership job was at a Jag dealer (plus lots more).Back in the 80s the fuel hoses, both flow and vapor, ran thru the cabin, over the headliner. Natural rubber, apparently. They got porous from the alcohols in US fuel, and the fumes in the cabin would drive you out. You had to remove the entire headliner to replace the fuel hoses, and being warranty you had to go back with the original Jag parts. They wanted me to be the designated Jag tech. Sorry, there ain't enough liquor in the NC system to do that. I changed dealerships shortly thereafter.
