My cat actually comes to the door to greets me when I come home and we talk back and forth.
But I think she's just saying, "Get me some chicken and pet me."

Dogs prepare us for babies, cats prepare us for teenagers.

Raising a dog along with the family is also about teaching the kids about mortality. The dog, with its shorter life span, shows the kids "aging" and helps prepare them for the eventual loss of their parents (in the natural process of things).

Yeah, I heard it expressed, “Dogs have owners, cats have staff.”

My wife & four daughters went to "animal control" today to get "A" foster cat. Came home with FOUR cats! Tell me: does anyone pay attention to language anymore?.... Now I am the ONLY male in a house with 3 hamsters, 3 Guinea pigs, 4 cats, 4 daughters, and one wife. The estrogen is so thick around here that it's starting to plug drains. Still don't know how "A" cat became FOUR!!

Haha! The simple answer is "you know your place." I was exactly the same as you - less the guinea pigs and hampsters. But I now also have 3 granddaughters! And, finally, a Grandson.

Do the 4 cats get along with each other? My 5 occasionally have spats.

I'll have to politely disagree with this post. My three boys (cats) are the best and take care of me and my old lady. One is a tuxedo I rescued from a box at about 1 and a half months old. Another is a feral tuxedo rescue my old lady rescued from the pound. Third one is a huge maine coon who has got to be almost twenty. He is Boss Cat.

We had a fourth, a white and orange longhair named Redmond. He had trouble not being alpha and he had to be re homed.

The remaining three are tighter than I've ever seen males get. They do act up, but they treat us hairless bi pedals like gold. They are empathetic (especially to my disabled old lady) and get along great.

Edited to add, the neighbors cat hangs out on the front porch. It gets a bit crowded over there with multiple families. We named him Preacher because he likes to corner other cats and talk at them. He is not violent, just manic. We set up a warm bed and feed him daily. The neighbors appreciate it.

Besides my indoor kitties, I've had an outside cat visiting my yard every day for a number of years. I've named her "Mollie" based on her mottled coloration. In 2014 she broke her left rear leg and I spent beaucoup bucks to get it fixed. It healed well and we've been friends ever since. However, in the past month a new family of feral cats has begun coming to my yard--a momma cat and 3 kittens--and Mollie doesn't like to come when they are here. She's missing a lot of her usual canned food by not coming when I call (I won't open the can if she's not there, because I don't want the other cats to eat it). I do worry about her. I know she's alive and able to climb the neighbor's tree, but she won't come to me when I call. I guess she's eating, though--there is always dry cat food in the yard.

The perspective of cats and dogs.

A human provides a dog food, shelter, veterinary care, pets it, walks it, plays with it and the dog looks at the human and says "Clearly, you are God!"
