techguyWrist watch question.
Is Citizen the best watch brand in the $300-$600 range?

Mark in MichiganSeiko would be another solid choice in that price range.

RogueJSKWhile Citizen and Seiko are the giants in that space and they make good watches, there are plenty of smaller microbrand watches in that price range with higher quality or more/better features than the big name brands like Citizen and Seiko.
I personally like Islander watches in that price range.

I had not heard of this brand. Good looking watches. Thanks for the tip.

I agree.

Islander uses primarily Seiko movements internally, but externally their watches have better quality sapphire crystals, better quality solid/milled bracelets, better quality ceramic or sapphire bezel inserts, better/brighter lume, and better styling (IMO) than the comparably priced - or often more expensive- bigger name brand watches in the price range like Seiko, Citizen, and others.
In short, a better bang for your buck.
Though I do have a few Seikos and Citizens as well...

BB61Bulova is also another peer of Citizen and Seiko.

TigerDoreEDIT: Adding to konata88's mention of Orient.
I have never owned one, but Orient Watch is a Japanese brand that has a pretty good reputation with a couple of collectors I know who also own high-end watches:

BigSwedeAlso on that Islander watch site is Spinnaker and Phoibos watches that I like
I would go to something like a Macy's and try on some watches. After spending quite a bit of money I found that I prefer a 43-46 mm case on a watch

gjgalliganI seldom wear a watch since I retired but I always wore less expensive watches.
I never understood why people payed high prices when the lower priced items kept the time just as good.
Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

Yes, Islander is the house brand for Long Island Watches, but they are a watch store and sell other brands too.
I like Spinnaker and Phoibos too, just not as much as Islander.

CPD SIGIt took this long for someone to say HELM?
https://helmwatches.com/index.htmlI found out about the Helm's on here, and loved them ever since. Absolute tank of a watch!
I have the Khuraburi Titanium and love the thing. As Rogue points out, there is a wait. I will say, it's worth it!
Citizen, Seiko are awesome watches.
Long Island, Phobios, Timex, Orient are all solid as well.

I was waiting to see if he even wanted a dive watch at all, and if he needed it right away versus being able to wait a while on a waitlist, before possibly recommending Helm.

RogueJSKAnd now that he has edited the OP from $300-$400 to $300-$600, that opens up even more brands.
In the $400-$600 range, I'm a big fan of Elliot Brown.
https://elliotbrownwatches.com...ections/mens-watchesMy Holton NIVO is my favorite watch. Love the unique green color (and the story behind it), plus it's exactly the right size for my wrist, and their ultra-soft woven band is the most comfortable I've ever worn.

SigSentryIn the solar quartz movement perhaps. I have an old citizen eco-drive but recently (couple years) picked up a Seiko solar diver (blue SNE585), and put on a jubilee bracelet from Marc at Islander Watch. They were discontinued a couple years ago. Reliable trouble-free timepiece.

1s1kThere’s literally hundreds of watches in that price range. There’s also many watch manufacturers that take a Seiko movement and do the rest themselves.

Sharkey717Citizen, Seiko and Victorinox are my go to.

OgieMy Bulova Moon Pilot watch runs about 1-2 seconds fast in about six months. Really....look it up!
April 11, 2026, 06:10 PM
P250UA5No complains about any of my Citizens or Seiko, other than having to choose which to wear each day.

Mars_AttacksCitizen punches well above their weight.
Citizen owns Bulova now and has revived the Accutron brand with their own high tech competitor to the Grand Seiko movement.
