I have a 2018 4Runner and I have a Yakima basket for it. You can’t mount a Cargo carrier on the factory cross bars so you have to get the aftermarket mounts and crossbars so about $1k. I would rather use the basket I have I just want some feed back from those that use this set up.

Thanks
Ed

I don't see why you couldn't assuming you mount it properly. Look into their Storm series of cases, they're designed to be even more waterproof than the others.

I did a DIY mount for the rear rack of my BMW S1000XR. It worked great but I did have to drill holes in the Pelican to make it work. I then sealed the Pelican with silicone and the whole rig works great and is waterproof and theft proof. Drilling the holes in an expensive Pelican was hard to face. It saved me major bucks over the outrageously expensive BMW rear case. I think your project can work but make sure it will be theft resistant. Pelican boxes scream "good stuff inside".

I imagine it could work just fine, just make sure it wont go flying if you happen to be in an accident. If you have an opportunity, you can fine good deals on Yakima and Thule small parts on ebay, and even better deals on complete set ups on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace.

What keeps you from mounting a cargo carrier to the 4Runner cross bars?

Also cargologic aluminum crossbars get very solid reviews and they are not expensive at all.

Wait, what?

A pelican case will make a huge amount of noise and significant drag on the interstate. I’d look into something more aerodynamic for the roof. Do you have a receiver hitch? A rear mounted rack would be a different matter for the pelican.

No. But I did buy a used Hardig box off Ebay with that intention. Not huge, but big enough to keep jumper cables, some tools, tow strap, a small jack etc in. An alternative to my larger cargo carrier. In the end I kind of changed my mind and didn't do it.

I did use it as my Ammo Box. Big Grin

That Pelican case is going to eat into your cargo capacity up there, too.

A regular roof rack and a basket is best, followed by an aerodynamic storage box.
