I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner, V6, with 155,000 miles. A few days ago my tachometer died. Before it quit working, the tachometer and fuel gauge would sputter and make faint clicking noise. It would typically happen just after opening the driver-side door. The fuel gauge looks like it’s next to die as it’s taking longer to show the correct fuel level. I’ve cleaned and checked my battery terminals. Even disconnected the battery in hopes that would reset the computer. No luck. Could it be a ground issue? Blown fuse? Ignition switch? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One gauge after another progressively dying is a little odd, but the clicking noise tells me the little electric stepper motors in the gauges are failing. The cluster would need to be removed and these motors replaced.

Look online at different Toyota forums, you can usually find the answers there. I have a jeep xj, I have found answers to everything that has gone wrong (so far) on different forums. Some are better than others. I also use you tube, to find videos on how to do the repair. They may not be exact, but they are close enough to get the job done. Sometimes you have to watch multiple videos and use your own discretion.
