Raptor folks: What is this bird?

He's preying on tweety birds around my feeder. I don't mind, Nature and all that, just curious what he is.

My wife, long retired master falconer license holder, says her guess is Cooper's hawk, considering location and food choice! Goshawk is second choice, for the same reasons. Both very good bird hunters!

looks like a falcon to me,got two of those that hang around and have taken out most of the Squirrels I used to feed,so I quit feeding for their own protection.
Man can those things dive like a bat out of hell.

Sitting outside my kitchen window chowing down. Nice clean window and telephoto on my Nikon Coopix 510 digital.

I am no professional bird expert, but I have to agree with this, due to the white throat (vs Cooper's Hawk).

IF the tailfeathers are an indication, Merlin, the Coopers I've looked at online have lighter colored feathers with dark stripes, Merlins have dark feathers with white stripes...

Merlin falcon.

Consider yourself lucky to have them around.
They are beautiful birds and very effective hunters. They are masters of the air.

It's worth having a birdfeeder just to attract raptors.

It's more common for Cooper's hawks to work a birdfeeder than a merlin in my experience.

Both are awesome raptors but the Merlin is especially cool!!

Now that we have the bird identified, I wanted to give a brief update on the Harris Hawk in distress I spoke of 3 weeks ago. Shortly thereafter, she apparently was able to free herself from what we now believe was not jesses, but monofilament, from a hawk trap. When we first saw her free of it, she was skinny and her tail looked very ragged from the experience. She has been hunting/eating and has rejoined the other 3 members of her pack.

No expert, but I do image them. My guess is a Merlin.
