As long as I can remember every state in the union has issued auto license plates of the same shape and size. But a couple of days ago I was astounded to see a car with a differently shaped CA license plate. At least its rear plate. Its front plate was same old, same old. Here are photos of front and rear plates. Another car was parked less than a foot behind, so I couldn’t get a straight shot. Because of the bad angle, I can’t tell for sure, but it appears to me that this car was designed to use this new rear license plate shape. I gotta say that legibility of the new plate is damned good. Front: Rear: ETA: This plate is far from the latest one that I’ve seen, which is 8YCJ111 (yeah, I keep track of ‘em). Serious about crackers

So more like the Euro plates, then. "I'm yet another resource-consuming kid in an overpopulated planet raised to an alarming extent by Hollywood and Madison Avenue, poised with my cynical and alienated peers to take over the world when you're old and weak!" - Calvin, "Calvin & Hobbes"

I'm very curious about that -- looking forward to the answers. I notice, too, that the front plate doesn't have the month and year stickers. Also, there appears to be a VW logo on the rear plate's frame, to the right of the CA DMV web address. What was the car, do you recall? God bless America.

The cake is a lie! |
So now if you buy a new car out of state, you have to ghetto rig this billboard to your standard plate bumper?

Funny Man |
A little Google fu found a site that will make you a Euro style plate, just like the one pictured, for $45.00. They say on the site use at your own risk basically. A couple of message boards discussing their use popped up and one poster recounted getting a ticket then successfully defending it in San Diego Country Court. Apparently in California there is no explicit statute that makes them illegal as long as they meet all of the requirements for reflection background, state name, etc… ______________________________ “I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living.” ― John Wayne

My first thought was that the new plate looks like it would be easier for an automatic license plate reader to scan. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

California license plate tags only go on the rear plate. The one shown in the OP appears to be third-party type like this one: https://www.customeuropeanplat...e-license-plate.html Note that they say these are NOT a legal replacement for the state plates. The DMV web site states the size of the plates to be used: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/...rnia-license-plates/ The only non-traditional plate authorized at this time is a digital plate - and it isn't cheap.

It's a Euro knock off. Let's stay with our current plates.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
I don't think this a a new format based on a search. More likely it's a European spec' car that was imported for some reason, maybe by the manufacturer or an individual that bought one of those reproduction tags to look cool. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

I thought I read digital plates will at some point replace metal. As to shape, Tennessee used to have plates shaped like the state.

It’s probably for the plate readers that are getting more and more popular.

Yeah, that's not a legit plate. The car owner is a wannabe, Euro poser. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

Isn't "wannabe Euro poser" very similar to "Californian?" J/k.

Poser kind of depends. If they imported the car and a US sized plate will not fit in the opening like in the picture provided. Kind of the only way to do it besides just sticking it in the back window which is likely illegal as well. Or I guess they could pull a Steve Jobs and just replace the car every six months and not have to have a plate (or rumor goes). ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. From the picture, it looks clear to me that they simply slapped a Euro sized plate over the mount for a US sized plate. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
I've always liked the format of the euro ones. And bear no particular national-pride over ours. It's one rectanglar sign vs another, ffs. Such things could hardly be more meaningless.

CA has been kicking the tires on digital plates for a few years now, I'll have to ask a friend to see what's going on with these and if Newsome is going to sign an EO on this too... https://www.sacbee.com/news/lo...rticle211828814.html

Quite likely. The “front” photo shows a plate holder with “Princeton University”. Serious about crackers

Besides the plate, it also has a frame and it has DMV.CA.GOV stenciled on, along with that VW logo. Did the owner customize the frame from a Euro-spec VW to imply approval from the CA DMV?
