While I like and eat both french toast is by far my favorite choice for breakfast. Today I discovered a new way to make my old favorite. Some of you have been probably doing this for years but it just dawned on me last night so I made it this morning and it was one of those where has this been all my life moments!?!

So the wife came home with a store bought pound cake because they were practically giving them away. I can't remember the last time I even had a slice of pound cake. I'm a pie not a cake guy. So I cut a slice last night and topped it with a little whipped cream and it was very good. As I'm eating this I thought I wonder how this would be as french toast. So this morning I whisked a couple eggs with cinnamon and vanilla extract and a bit of milk. Sliced three pieces of pound cake about a half inch or more thick. Soak the pieces in the egg batter for a couple minutes letting the cake really soak it in. Put it in the cast iron pan with a good amount of hot oil. They became a beautiful golden brown frying for about two minutes on each side. This cake was fresh and I think this might work even better if it's a little more on the dry side.

The result was absolute heaven! Topped with a slab of butter and maple syrup that was tapped locally by a friend of mine this spring. Crispy on the outside and sweet soft cake on the inside. I may never go back to using sliced bread of any kind again. Wasn't thinking about pics at the time so sorry for the lack of pics. Trust me on this and give it a try if you already haven't.

Though the poundcake thing sounds great, pancakes, hands down. Since para posted the 'optimize yer pancakes' thread, we have had pancakes to that recipe for the last two Saturdays.

I once had French Toast in Australia made with banana bread… you can’t eat them quickly. Delicious.

When I PLAN to make French Toast I buy challah bread, slice it thick, leave it in a cold oven overnight to dry out (I have dogs that countersurf at night) and soak it in the batter for a good hour in the morning, flipping every so often. Put a lot of butter in the pan to create crispy edges… man, I’m getting hungry.

With real maple syrup, none of that flavored corn syrup garbage for me. Lots of butter too!

French toast please...batter is eggs only (no milk), cinnamon, vanilla (the real stuff). Thick sliced Italian or Texas toast sized bread. Real butter & real maple syrup. (sometimes strawberry jam added for variety along w/ syrup). Breakfast sausage completes it. No sausage, no French toast. I do need to try the challah bread at my next opportunity. Sounds good.

Waffles>French toast>pancakes

I'll even eat the leaden waffles you make at motel breakfast bars though my homemade ones are far better.

Given the choice, I’ll take French Toast every time. Never been a big pancake fan.

We buy Croissant Bread at our Costco and it makes phenomenal FT.

I'm a French Toast kinda person, but you ain't never lived until you've had C Ration Peaches and C Ration Pound Cake mixed together in your canteen cup. Just sayin'.

Hawaiian bread makes for good french toast. Brioche as well.

I've been known to use sesame seed hamburger buns as well

Any bun that is sweet, light and airy works for me.

We had Jenkins Turkey in our rats. I’d trade it away for the chocolate pudding. Also had a tin of bread that was packaged the year I was born.

Back to the topic - French toast with real maple syrup.

French toast made with fresh home-baked French bread, topped with sliced fresh-picked strawberries and whipped cream. Yes, I bake my own bread, a couple of loaves weekly, and grow my own strawberries, but I have been known to use store-bought berries when the crop is not adequate.

Make bacon pancakes.

My go to bread prior to this was Pepperidge Farms Swirl Bread. They have several varieties but their brown sugar cinnamon thick sliced swirl was my favorite for French toast.

Ah....picking up some apple-cinnamon and cinnamon swirl breads tomorrow to try for French Toast!

Normally enjoy brioche bread for French Toast with a pat of quality butter, some maple syrup or fruit puree, and a dusting of powdered sugar, but this bread variation sounds interesting.
