V-TailWhat Is This Scam?
I just received an unsolicited text message:
quote:
SMS from (218) 384-0520
<Public Record Msg#792> A Background Scan, Was Just Initiated 0n Your Name: See Details
http://life4scan.cyou/81/xxxxxxxxxx
The "xxxxxxxxxx" is my editing -- it was my iPhone number in the message that I received.
Does anybody know what this scam is? I have not seen this one before.

AeteoclesIt asks you to pay to see what information they have on you, which is nothing that isn't publicly available.

I wonder how much they will pay me if I upload some better ones to their site.

This is usually my first reaction as well but then I stop and think it might be foolish to give them a reason to pay particular attention to me!

And the moniker "V-Tail" is not what we first thought.

ersatzknarfAre you also getting texts asking you to borrow $100 to $40K ?
Can't tell you how many times I've blocked those numbers...

Pipe SmokerWhen I get such texts on my iPhone, I do this:
Click “Edit” (upper left corner).
Click “Select messages” in the menu that opens.
Click the circle to the left of the offending text.
Click “Delete” (lower right corner).
With that procedure, the sender doesn’t see a “Read” response. A “Read” response encourages them to send more junk texts.

iPhone has an option is "Settings" to either enable or disable "Read" response.
If enabled, then the default is that anybody (everybody) who sends to you via iMessage, will receive the "Read" notification when you read the message.
If disabled, default is that nobody will receive the "Read" notification, but you can override the default for individuals on a case by case basis.
The text that I received was not an iMessage from an iPhone user, it was an SMS message from (presumably) an Android phone. The "Delivered" and "Read" status returns are only applicable between iPhone users.
