The retirement horizon is approaching.
I am covered nicely for now and until actual retirement.
It is time to start considering exit strategies. The current and most lucrative will require me to find an independent LTD policy. Short term is handled their provided LTD option is junk.

Unum. Of course you never know until you need it. Been around a long time. Merger of Unum and Provident. Disability insurance is much more important than Life Insurance.

I don’t understand. LTD is for income replacement and less relevant in later years and definitely after retirement.

I am 40 and will soon have the opportunity to retire with a decent pension. I will be able to be rehired doing exactly what I am doing now but receiving my pension plus my current salary.
However, I will be a contract employee and not covered by a disability pension like I am now. I am not eligible for Social Security.
If I get hurt after retiring workman’s comp is all I have to cover my 2nd income ability. I still have a lot of years to make good money and invest quite a bit down the road so that when I fully retire and choose not to work, I will have my pension, but also the 457 I have been investing in for the last 18 years, plus the future investments I will be doing with my second income.
So looking for something to be able to recoup a decent portion of that 2nd income if I were to get hurt in the next few years.

Makes good sense. I have had a disability plan since I started my business. An important point you want coverage for your skills. Those plans are more expensive but worth it. I believe it is called occupation specific coverage.

Not exactly what you are looking for but don't forget about AFLAC. I have been with them for years.

The company I worked for had long term disability as one of the benefits they provide. UNUM is the long term disability provider.

I've been receiving benefits since November of 2021. They've reevaluated my case in January and are extending benefits out until this November. The benefits are two thirds of my salary.

They also have another company, Genex, that helps with applying for long term disability with Social Security. They assisted me with the application. My claim with SSA has been under evaluation going on 11 months now. As long as I'm receiving payments from UNUM I was told I would have to file an appeal with SSA should my application for disability be denied by them. Genex would represent me in the appeal.

I don't know what specific benefits UNUM offers through policies purchased privately but what I've stated above are what my company provided.

And as some else stated the payments have been a God send.
